which have been unseasonably fierce for several days past, will receive an effectual check from the late and coming rain,-for more, we trust, is forthcoming.-Atheneum, Sept. 18. MOFUSSIL.

RAMNAD.-A letter of the 3rd instant from Ramnad contains the following melancholy news. Poor Stuart, of the 31st T. L. I., died here last night at 10 o'clock; the immediate cause of his death was apoplexy. He was much esteemed in his regiment, and will be generally regretted.-Spectator, Sept. 8.

VIZAGAPATAM.-The ship Seringapatam, Captain Furnell, anchored in the roads on the evening of the 4th instant, and sailed again on the day following for Calcutta. Annexed is a list of her passengers:-Major Wright, deputy assistant quarter-mastergeneral, lady and family; Major Lambert, deputy judge advocate-general; T. J. Knox and G. Arbuthnot, Esqs. The arrival of Major Wright will relieve Captain Reynolds, of the 26th regiment N.I., from the appointment of acting deputy assistant quarter-master-general.

Rain.-Since my last communication, we have had an abundant fall of rain: for three or four days successively it came down steadily, with scarcely any intermission; during this time about five inches of rain fell. The weather, which in the month of September is generally close and sultry, has since the last fall of rain been delightfully cool and pleasant, and the immense hills which surround us exhibit a splendid appearance, being covered to their summit with a rich green colour. Yesterday was the only day during the present week we have had fair weather, and to-day the clouds have again gathered, portending a further supply of rain.-Athenæum, Sept. 8.

Sept. 14.-Death of Brigadier Cooke.-It is my painful duty this week to have to communicate to you the death of Brigadier A. Cooke, which occurred at Waltair yesterday (13th of Sept.), at half-past 3 A.M. His remains were conveyed to their last resting-place last evening, attended by all the civil and military officers at the station, and were interred with due military honours. The 50th regt. N.I., and the drummers of that corps, were in attendance.-Ibid. Sept. 21.

ILLNESS OF CAPT. OGILVY.-We are concerned to hear that

Capt. Ogilvy, of the 35th regt., is in an extremely reduced state from the bursting of an abscess in the liver.-U. S. Gazette, Sept. 7.

LIEUT. SYKES.-We understand that Lieut. Sykes, N.I. 94th regt., has applied for two years' leave on furlough to Europe.-Athenæum, Sept. 16.

CAUTION RESPECTING BILLS.-We deem it right to caution the mercantile community of Madras, and others engaged in trade, how they negotiate bills without being duly advised of their authenticity and genuineness. We have been informed that several bills, purporting to be drawn and negotiated by the most respectable houses in London to their correspondents in India, have recently found their way to Madras and Calcutta, but fortunately discovered to be false previous to the departure of the steamer Bentinck for Suez, by which vessel the proceeds under discount were to be remitted to the parties concerned in the forgeries. So perfect, indeed, was the imitation of genuine signatures, that the most experienced eye was deceived. The bills above referred to are stated to us to have amounted to no less a sum than one lakh and fifty thousand rupees.-Circulator, Sept. 17.

RAIN.-On Thursday night the Presidency was visited by a very heavy and continuous down-pour of rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning. The quantity that fell amounted to three inches. It is to be hoped that the dry westerly winds

We trust our respected contemporary, the Friend of India, will not quarrel with us for pointing out what seems a frailty in his perceptions of the position of our Oriental empire: though sanguine and hopeful in his views in reference to matters of minor moment, in affairs of magnitude he is one of the most timid of men. When we traced the path over which our politicians were hurrying us to destruction in 1840, and indicated the loss of some half-dozen officers monthly by the climate of Scinde, our good brother pronounced our views to be too gloomy. Cabool at one time had, like adversity, its sweet uses; it shewed us how strong we were after we had done all we could to weaken ourselves. Again, when Persia lay impotent before the gates of Herat, our contemporary conceived India to be in danger; and we were in 1842 assured that if a war of vengeance were not engaged in, we should have all the petty chiefs in India about our ears. Since the campaign on the Sutlej, it has been a favourite and frequent figure with our brother, that the fate of India trembled in the balance and depended on that of Sobraon. The figure is a pretty one, but far from historically correct, and, like most fallacies, is deserving of exposure, not only as being fallacious, but as being mischievous. That we should have suffered fearfully had we been compelled to retire before the Sikhs, is beyond all question; that our empire in the East would have been endangered by defeat, is, we apprehend, as unsound as that the British empire would have been extinguished had Buonaparte conquered at Waterloo. When the question was put to Wellington what he would have done had Blucher not come up to enable him to complete the victory, he said he would have retired on the wood of Soigné; and when asked what, if driven from the wood,
