ADIES TRAVELLING, or otherwise exposed to the scorching rays of the sun, and heated particles of dust, will find ROWLANDS KALYDOR a most refreshing preparation for the complexion, dispelling the cloud of languor and relaxation, allaying all heat and irritability, and immediately affording the pleasing sensation attending restored elasticity of the skin. The numerous varieties of cutaneous eruptions, together with sun-burn, freckles, tan, and discolorations, are pleasingly eradicated by the Kalydor, and the skin rendered delicately soft and clear." Its purifying and refreshing properties have obtained its exclusive selection by her Majesty the Queen, the COURT and the Royal Family of Great Britain, and the several COURTS of Europe; together with the élite of the aristocracy and haute volée, from the sultry climes of India and the drawing-rooms of Calcutta and Madras to the frozen realms of the Czar and the saloons of St. Petersburg and Moscow. Price 4s. 6d. and 8s. 6d. per bottle.

Beware of spurious" KALYDORS," containing mineral astringents utterly ruinous to the complexion, and which, by their repellent action, endanger health.

ROWLANDS' MACASSAR OIL.-The singular virtues of this successful invention for restoring, improving, and beautifying the Human Hair, are too well known and appreciated to need comment. The very fact of its having stood the test of nearly half a century of probation, and obtained the especial patronage of her Majesty the Queen, H.R.H. Prince Albert, the whole of the Royal Family, and of every Court in the civilized world, and the high esteem in which it is universally held, together with numerous testimonials constantly received of its efficacy, afford the best and surest proof of its merits.-Price 3s. 6d. ; 7s.; family bottles (equal to four small), 10s. 6d., and double that size, 21s. per bottle.

ROWLANDS' ODONTO, or PEARL DENTIFRICE, a white Powder for the Teeth, compounded of the choicest and most recherché ingredients of the Oriental Herbal, of inestimable virtue for preserving and beautifying the Teeth and strengthening the Gums. Its truly efficient and fragrant aromatic properties have obtained its selection by the Court and Royal Family of Great Britain, and the sovereigns and nobility throughout Europe.-Price 2s. 9d. per box.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION.-Unprincipled individuals, for the sake of gaining a trifle more profit, vend the most spurious compounds under the names of "Macassar Oil," "Kalydor," and "Odonto;" some under the implied sanction of Royalty and the Government Departments, with similar attempts at deception, while they copy the labels, advertisements, and testimonials (substituting fictitious names and addresses for the real) of the original preparations. It is therefore highly necessary to see that the word “RÖWLANDS" is on the wrapper of each article.-All others are FRAUDULENT IMITATIONS!!

The genuine articles are sold by the Proprietors, and by every respectable Perfumer and Chemist throughout the kingdom.

TO FLAUTISTS.

13, HANWAY

THOMAS SPROW SENDON (SOLE MARK STREET,

BRATED CHARLES NICHOLSON'S FLUTES), takes this opportunity to inform the Musical Public in India and the Colonies that he now also manuLactures Flutes on the principle of the talented Flautist, JOSH, RICHARDSON; therefore all future orders should state whether a "NICHOLSON" or "RICHARDSON" Flute is required.

These instruments possess a remarkable brilliancy of tone, and are perfect in intonation and tune in every key; the superiority of style in the finishing department leaves nothing to be wished for by the connoisseur, and the plan adopted only by T. P. of seasoning the wood for extreme climates renders these instruments far superior to any others now manufactured.

The prices are the same as for the "Nicholson's" Flutes, and vary, according to their number of keys, from 11 guineas to 30 guineas; and purchasers, to prevent their being imposed upon, will receive a certificate, signed by the approver and maker, thus-JosH. RICHARDSON and THOS. PROWSE.

All orders must be accompanied with a remittance, or by an order through their agent in London.

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC.-BILIOUS & LIVER COMPLAINTS. No medicine

DIXON'S ANTIBILIOUS PILLS.

[ocr errors]

ever offered to the public has met with such general approval as DIXON'S ANTIBILIOUS PILLS. For the last FIFTY YEARS they have been considered a safe and effectual remedy for complaints arising from affections of the liver and stomach, viz, indigestion, loss of appetite, heartburn, flatulence, spasms, costiveness, and the disorders caused from the want of a proper secretion of the bile. They are well calculated for those persons, and elderly people, who are obliged constantly to take some medicine in order to assist the action of the bowels, as they contain no drastic ingredients (or mercury in any shape), and their repeated use does not lessen their efficacy, or weaken the stomach. They have a peculiar effect in relieving headache, and all the disagreeable symptoms which arise from too much wine, or any excess of the table. As a medicine in warm climates, where bilious complaints are so frequent and alarming, they are an invaluable remedy, and strongly recommended to persons who travel, as they retain their effect for some years.

The proprietors of this excellent preparation, in consequence of repeated application, have been induced to offer a ONE SHILLING Box, which is sold, wholesale and retail, with the former sizes, at their new establishment, 24, Conduit Street, Regent Street. None are genuine which have not GEORGE DIXON engraved on the government stamp, sealed with his arms; and wholesale by Messrs. Butler and Harding, Cheapside; Barclay and Sons, Farringdon Street; Newbury and Edwards, St. Paul's Churchyard; Sutton and Co., Bow Churchyard; Willoughby and Co., Bishopsgate Street; Dietrichsen and Hannay, Oxford Street; in Dublin by Messrs. TOOPING of the SHOULDERS and CONTRACTION of the CHEST are entirely prevented, and gently and effectually removed in Youth, and Ladies and Gentlemen, by the occasional use of the IMPROVED ELASTIC CHEST EXPANDER, which is light, simple, easily applied, either above or beneath the dress, and worn without any uncomfortable constraint or impediment to exercise. To young persons especially it is highly beneficial, immediately producing an evident improvement in the figure, and tending greatly to prevent the incursion of pulmonary diseases; whilst to the invalid, and those much engaged in sedentary pusuits, such as reading or studying, working, drawing or music, it is found to be invaluable, as it expands the chest and affords a great support to the back. It is made in Silk; and can be forwarded, per post, by Mr. ALFRED BINYON, Sole Manufacturer and Proprietor, No. 40, Tavistock Street, Covent Garden, London; or full particulars, with prices and mode of measurement, &c. on receipt of a postage stamp.

The principle adopted by the Universal Life Assurance Society, of an annual valuation of assets and liabilities, and a division of three-fourths of the profits among the assured, is admitted to offer great advantages, especially to those parties who may wish to appropriate their proportion of profit to the reduction of future premiums.

The following Table will shew the result of the last division of profits, as declared on the 12th May, 1847, to all persons who had on that day paid six annual premiums. This will be found a liberal reduction if the original premiums be compared with those of other offices adopting a similar plan of division of profits:

STOCKINGS are now daily patronized by the leading members of the profession; their superiority over every other manufactured fabric, for artificial support, is admitted by all who inspect them; they afford an equal, comforting, and permanent pressure, on every portion of the limb, avoiding the excessive trouble of lacing; they are drawn on with the facility of an ordinary stocking, adding little or no size to the leg. The success that has attended every case submitted to them, through the profession or otherwise, has established the confidence of all the first practitioners. H. and Co. are therefore enabled to guarantee a comfort and support hitherto unknown in any other form of bandaging. It is remarkable that every kind of surgical stockings lately used have a tendency to impede the free and healthy action of the muscles, thereby producing relaxation and great diminution of the limb. The following peculiar advantages are offered by this Company :1. Their policies cover the risk of living and voyaging over a far larger portion of the globe than do those issued by any other Company in existence. They allow the assured to reside in the Australasian and North American colonies, and at the Cape of Good Hope. They also allow one passage out and home to any of those colonies. For British India a very moderate extra premium is charged.

2. Premiums may be paid, and claims settled at Sydney, Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay.

3. A third of the premiums may remain unpaid for five years; nor is it necessary for the maintenance of the Assurance to pay up the premium at the end of that time, but the unpaid thirds may remain as a debt against the policy, if the interest be regularly paid upon them as the renewal premiums fall due. ANNUITIES.

The Annuities offered by the Company are on a more favourable scale than those offered by any other Companies, having been calculated with reference to the rates of Interest obtainable on Colonial Investments. Annuitants also participate in the profits.

GENERAL AGENCY, No. 121, Leadenhall-street (opposite the East-India House).

W. M. BOYCE and CO. in returning thanks to their friends and supporters for the liberal patronage already bestowed on them, beg to intimate that their offices are now established at No. 127, Leadenhall-street.

W. M. BOYCE and Co. continue to forward supplies and goods of every description to Messes, Families, and Individuals, on the most moderate terms, by the Cape or Overland. Passages to the Three Presidencies, or China, by sailing vessels, vid the Cape, or by steam, via the Red Sea, nego tiated on the most favourable terms.

Outfits for Officers appointed to the Civil, Military, Naval, or Medical Establishments in India, procured with every attention to economy consistent with the supplying of first-rate articles.

PAY and PENSIONS drawn and remitted to any part of Great Britain or the Continent. Luggage cleared and warehoused, and Parcels and Letters forwarded Overland to India.

In order to render their agency as efficient as possible, W. M. B. and Co. would call particular attention to the following points, which they consider of great importance, not only to their friends, but to the public generally.

It frequently occurs that gentlemen residing in India are compelled to send their wives and children home, and remain in India themselves. Circumstances often compel ladies and children to land in England without any one to receive and relieve them from the troubles and annoyances attendant on disembarkation, after a long and fatiguing voyage, and the clearing of their luggage through the Custom-house. In order to meet these cases, one of the Firm is prepared to attend any so situated, personally, and to escort them to their friends. Parties wishing to avail themselves of this accommodation should communicate their intention, in writing, by the Overland Mail, in sufficient time to admit of proper arrangements being made for their recep tion. Parents in India wishing to send their children to England for education, and unable to accompany them, may avail themselves of W. M. B. and Co.'s agency, who will undertake to receive them, place them at school, and act as guardians, if necessary. If requisite, reference can be given to parties who have already availed themselves of this arrangement. Inconvenience is often felt, and great expense incurred, in consequence of families arriving from India without having previously decided upon a place of residence. This may be obviated by timely application to BOYCE and CO., who are prepared to engage permanent or temporary residences for all parties arriving from India.

A residence of upwards of twenty years in India, the greater portion of which was passed in the East India Company's naval service, renders the head of the Firm peculiarly fitted for the business which is now sought, and which is merely reverted to here as a guarantee that the most scrupulous attention to the interests and wants of their supporters will be attended with the advantage of being able to impart, from actual experience, any informa tion which may be required relative to India.

ARRIVAL OF MAILS.

[PRICE 18.

spirit has rendered this step indispensable. The immediate occasion of it will appear in the following narrative, which we derive from the Bengal Hurkaru :

was

"On the 7th of last month, the title and dignity of Rajah was conferred on Sirdar Tej Singh, the President of the Council of Regency. The ceremony of installation was attended by the resident, with many other British officers, and also a number of ladies; while on the side of the Seiks all the sirdars and chiefs about the capital were present to do honour to the occasion. The company was assembled, and waited for the appearance of the young Maharajah, who was to be the chief actor in the performance. An hour elapsed, and still his Highness did not come forth. At length a messenger was sent to request the honour of his presence; and he now entered the hall, but to the great scandal of the whole court it was observed that he 630 not attired as befitted the occasion. This, however, was not the only affront which the little prince offered to his about-to-be-ennobled subject and counsellor. It was his part of the performance to make, with his own royal finger, the symbolical mark or teeka of nobility on the forehead of the Rajab-elect; but when the moment for this arrived, the diminutive sovereign positively refused to perform the process. No notice was taken of this at the time, and the Maharajah's Gooroo or priest made the necessary mark on the brow of Tej Singh. But it was evident that the young prince had acted under instruction;-it was at once concluded that he was putting in practice a lesson of his most respectable mother. The Ranee, as has long been notorious, is violently ini. mical to the present order of things at Lahore, and inveterately hostile alike to the Seik chiefs and the British officers who carry on the government. This ill-will has found vent in various petty modes of annoyance, and probably would, had an opportunity presented itself, have led her Highness to do what she could to overthrow the regency. However, in default of the power to injure, the lady was content to insult the resident and the council in the person of Rajah Tej Singh, the object of her special antipathy. But the affront speedily recoiled upon her own head. The powers that be were by this outrage induced to take her Highness's conduct into their serious consideration, and, apparently, they soon arrived at the conclusion, that it was necessary for the peace and safety of the Government that she should be deprived of the power of prejudicing the mind of the young Maharajah, her son, against his protectors and counsellors. It was, therefore, resolved in the first place to remove her creatures from about the person of the young prince, and the resolution was immediately carried into effect. Several of the Ranee's confidential attendants, including the famous "slave girl" Mungela, were ordered out of the palace, and some of them sent to a considerable distance from Lahore. Finally, the consent of the Governor-General having been obtained for the measure, the Ranee herself was, on the night of the 20th ultimo, sent off under an escort to the fort of Shaikpoora, about twenty-five miles from Lahore, and once the prison-residence of another lady of similar character, the wife of Runjeet Singh, and the mother of Kurruck Singh, his son and successor. There the Ranee Chunda is to dwell under surveillance, and there, most probably, she will end her days."

The Bentinck, with the mails, left Calcutta Sept. 8; Saugor, 10; Madras, 15; Point de Galle, 19; Aden, 30; and arrived at Suez Oct. 7.

The Pekin brought the mails from China. She left Hong Kong Aug. 25; Singapore, Sept. 5; and Penang, 8.

The Seaforth, with a mail, left Bombay Sept. 11.

The mails thus brought reached Alexandria on the 10th inst. whence they were conveyed to Malta by the Hindostan, where they arrived on the 14th inst. The Ardent here took on the Marseilles portion, and arrived at the last-named place on the 18th inst. The Hindostan, with the remainder, may be expected at Southampton about the 27th inst.

The Haddington, with the London mail of July 24, arrived at Calcutta Sept. 4. The Semiramis, with the London mail of Aug. 7, reached Bombay Sept. 4 (in the short space of twenty-seven days ten hours).

Colonel LAWRENCE left Lahore, for Simla, on the 21st of August.

SCINDE is as quiet as the PUNJAB. There is nothing to break the monotony but a project of the officers serving there to subscribe twelve thousand rupees for the purpose of complimenting Sir CHARLES NAPIER by presenting some token of respect to Lady NAPIER. The Governor of Scinde, however, declined the intended honour, on the ground that the acceptance of such a compliment would be a breach of the spirit of the regulations. There is a report that the meeting to
