THUNDER STORM.-The following account of the effects of the thunder storm by which Madras was visited on the night of the 4th inst. is from our reporter:-" Between the hours of nine and ten on the night of Friday last, Madras was visited by a thunder storm, which fortunately was but of short duration. The sky became murky with dark overhanging clouds, and a little after nine o'clock a heavy shower of rain descended, followed by vivid flashes of lightning, and peals, in quick succession, of hoarse rumbling thunder, some of them louder than others, and one of them in particular so sharp, harsh, and grating, as to lead to the apprehension that mischief to some extent had been done. The results of the storm have been loss of life and considerable damage to a house in town. A native female was struck dead. She was about sixty-five or seventy years of age, a widow, and inhabited a house (No. 26) in Permaul Covilstreet, adjacent to the Chenga Bazaar. Some time after nine o'clock on the night in question, she was observed by her people to come out to the threshold of the street door to wash herself, as was customary with her, notwithstanding the prevailing storm; and ere a few minutes transpired a sheep, known to have been tied without the house, was heard to bleat so repeatedly as to attract the attention of the inmates. On coming out to ascertain the cause, they found the old woman prostrate and dead, and upon examination her hair was discovered to be singed and her left shoulder scorched. The

stroke shivered a block of wood that lay about four feet from the spot on which the deceased was found, and although the sheep was secured by a rope to another block of wood scarcely a foot from the one destroyed, the animal escaped unscathed. An upper-roomed house, situated in town, in the rear of the commissariat timber-yard, Beach, sustained some damage, but without injury to the people within it, consisting of four persons. The electric fluid struck the parapet of the terrace, and, peeling off the chunam coating of the wall, which was pierced through, it passed along, warping the door-frame and wrenching off a large iron lock, which was thrown with violence to the other end of the hall. Another door also sustained some damage, and near it was found an orifice, through which, it is supposed, the fluid must have escaped. The barque Intrepid, now lying in the roadstead, was struck, the fluid running down the mainmast and along the chain on deck; and so was a cocoa-nut tree situated near the Madras University. The tree was surrounded by a group of huts; and although the lightning shivered the former into splinters, not one of the latter was touched, nor did we hear of any damage ensuing to the Intrepid. The storm lasted about an hour, and died away in distant rolls of thunder."—Athenæum, June 8.

MOFUSSIL.

BANGALORE, May 8.-Military.-The A company 2nd battalion artillery arrived here en route from Colapore to St. Thomas's Mount on the 1st, and left on the 6th instant; the men appear to be in good health and spirits. The 2nd light cavalry arrived here on the 2nd instant, en route from Kolapore to Trichinopoly; both men and horses look exceedingly well, considering the length of their march; they left this morning in continuation of their route.

The Weather.-The average range of the thermometer at present, in the shade, is as follows:-6 A.м. 70°, noon 86o, 6 P. M. 71°. Although it ranges thus high, the weather is remarkably pleasant, in consequence of the rains having cooled and moistened the earth very much.-Athenæum, May 13.

BERHAMPORE.-Camp, Causepoojah, May 8, 1847.—A detachment of the 50th regiment N. I., consisting of four companies, under the command of Brevet-Major Rose, left Berhampore on the morning of the 3rd instant, en route for Waltair, having been relieved by two companies of the 41st regiment from Goomsoor. The march to this place has not been unpleasant, nor has there been any epidemic: there are about 65 sick in hospital, of which number the major part are relapses from the Goomsoor fever. The roads are pretty good, and the villages afford ample supplies of water. We halt here to-day, and start to-morrow, expecting to arrive at Waltair on the 20th instant. It is very generally rumoured that the 50th will only remain at Waltair for a few months, preparatory to embarkation for Maulmain.Athenæum, May 18.

CANNANORE.-April 30.— Storm.—-Since my last, the weather assumed a regular monsoonish appearance-the rain commenced pouring in torrents from the evening of the 16th till noon of the 19th instant-during which period the wind blew violently from S. E. by E.-the lightning was in streams, and the claps and peals of thunder awful and terrific-there was occasional rain for a day or two afterwards-the sky has been beclouded ever since, portentous of the approaching monsoon. Upwards of 13 inches of rain had fallen in that short time-which has filled all the wells, before nearly dry. The ryots have taken advantage of this seasonable supply of rain, and have already commenced sowing the wet grain. During this stormy weather, the sea was exceedingly rough and boisterous hundreds of Pattimars have been lost in this gale-and with them a great quantity of valuable goods and also the lives of numbers. A number of buildings in the town of Cannanore have fallen downand with them, the Custom-House and part of a house in which the coals are stored. This tempestuous weather has proved ruinous to many new works; the upper story of the Tellicherry Court-House fell down, and killed one of the workmen.

Shipping. The H. C. steamer Sesostris, having on board the D company 5th battalion Artillery and D company Sappers and Miners, arrived from Ader the afternoon of the 21st instantthe Artillery company wereen and there transhipped on board the H. C. steamer Hugh Lindsay-and the Sappers disembarked and encamped near the Native Infantry Barracks.

- Military.-The D company Sappers and Miners, under the command of 2nd Lieut. Hemery, of the Engineers, commenced their march en route to Frazerpett on the 30th instant.

10th May, 1847.-Lieut. O. Selby, of the 5th battalion Artillery, arrived here from Mangalore and assumed command of the head-quarters of the E company from Lieut. Scott, who has obtained leave to visit the Neilgherries.-Ibid. May 20.

COIMBETORE.-May 17.-Our little community has been dispersed. Mr. Waters, lady and family, are at Cotagherry. Mrs. Porteous and family are staying at Coonoor, and our worthy collector, lady and family, are still at Ootacamund. The weather is rather warm, but nothing in comparison to the heat now felt at Madras. Assistant Apothecary Bond passed through this on the 10th instant en route to Sedashseghur. Dr. Porteous paid a visit to the hills, where he performed a surgical operation on a lady while under the influence of ether. I have not the particulars. The detachment of the 39th regt. under the command of Captain Sweet, stand fast for six months longer, in conse. quence of the Sepoy lines of the regiment at Paulghaut having been burnt down.-Athenæum, May 25.

KAMPTEE, May 10.-The Weather.-The weather here at present is most unusual; as yet we have had no heat to complain of; the nights and mornings are cool and pleasant. The half-yearly inspection of H. M.'s 4th foot commenced this morning. Lieuts. N. and B. of the 8th Cavalry, who left this on a week's leave on the morning of the 8th, were, I hear, successful enough to kill a fine, full-grown tiger the same evening.-Ibid. May 20.

MYSORE.-Rain. After many months' weary drought, we are at last overjoyed at the delightful showers of rain that we are now blessed with, accompanied with loud peals of thunder and vivid flashes of lightning; it is pleasing to observe that every thing around, which but a few days before looked dry and parched up, is now being clothed with Nature's lovely verdure; the ryots are all busily engaged ploughing up their fields for the purpose of sowing raggy (which forms the chief food of the poorer class of this place), and we trust that their anticipations of reaping a goodly crop this season will not be disappointed. A subscription paper for the distressed Irish and Scotch is being circulated here by the Rev. Messrs. Sanderson and Glanville, of the Wesleyan Society.

Military.-The left wing of the 15th N. I. passed through this, en route to Bangalore, a few days ago, and I am informed that three of the privates, who were suffering from ulcers in the legs, have been sent to his highness the rajah's hospital; with these exceptions, no other disease of any kind appears to haved raged in the camp.-Ibid. May 13.

May 20.-W. Gilchrist, Esq., from Hoonsoor, is at present at Mysore, and I hear that he intends making a stay here of a few months: it is reported that he is acting for A. N. Magrath, Esq., who is on leave at Ootacamund.-Ibid. May 25.

NEGAPATAM, May 15.-The weather here continues oppressive, and the inhabitants are anxiously looking out for rain. J. J. Minchin, Esq.acting head assistant collector, with his circuit Cutcherry, will leave this for Tranquebar on Tuesday next. J. F. Bishop, Esq., is just now at Tranquebar, and will shortly proceed to Point Calamier via Negapatam-he has appointed Mr. Simon Thomas to the head accountantship, and Mr. John Roze, deputy. -Ibid. May 20.

OOTACAMUND, May 22.-There is a great number of sojourners now on these hills. Every habitable dwelling at this station, as well as at Coonoor and Kotagherry, is occupied, and many are still in quest of quarters. There is a constant fluctuation amongst our community. Lieut. Gen. Welsh, Col. Dunn, Col. Prior, and Capt. Fitzmaurice, arrived two days ago. G. D. Drury, Esq., is expected to-day or to-morrow. Amongst the recent departures are Col. Taylor, Col. Stockwell, and Major Key, of the King's Hussars; several others are going off about the end of this month.-Ibid. May 29.

TRICHINOPOLY, May 13.-A detachment of recruits, about fifty in number, for the 2nd E. L. I. arrived here yesterday; they are a fine-looking set of young men. No casualties on the road, as far as I have been able to learn, had taken place, the arrangements for their march having been highly judicious and the recruits conducting themselves in an orderly and praiseworthy manner. The cavalry lines here have been put in order, and every other preparation made against the arrival of the 2nd, expected at Trichinopoly in the early part of June.-Ibid. May 25.

VIZAGA PATAM.-May 8.-Military-The 50th regt. N. I. under the command of Colonel Green, arrived here yesterday morn. ing, from Goomsoor, leaving a detachment of the corps under Brevet Major Rose, and in medical charge of Assistant Apothecary J. White, at Berhampore, which is now en route to join. The detachment of the 41st regt. N. I. under the command of Brevet Major Rochfort, and Assistant Surgeon Adams, M. D. in medical charge, will march on the morning of the 11th or 12th instant, to rejoin the head-quarters of the corps at Berhampore.

The insurgents in an about the neighbourhood of Goodim in the Golcondah Zemindary, continuing still to be troublesome in robbing and plundering villages, and two men (a Naigue and a Sepoy), on detachment duty at the former out-post, having been, I am informed, wounded, P. B. Smollet, Esq. collector

and agent, proceeded a short time since to the above place with a view, if possible, to bring the disaffected tribe to conciliatory measures, but I believe did not succeed; and having being seized with rather a sharp attack of fever, he was obliged to quit the country for this place, where he arrived on the morning of the 5th instant, and is now under medical treatment. Doctor Forster, in medical charge of the troops at Nursapatam, having also been attacked with fever, arrived here a few days ago for medical advice.-Athenæum, May 15.

May 20.-The detachment of the 11th regiment N. I. under the command of Lieut. Benson, embarked on the evening of the 9th instant on the steamer Hugh Lindsay, bound to Mergui and Tavoy. The remaining portion of the corps are still here, awaiting the arrival of the Tenasserim.

The detachment of the 50th regiment N. I. which had been left behind at Berhampore, under the command of Major Rose, on the march of the corps from that place, arrived here this morning.

The detachment of the 41st regiment, under Brevet Major Rochfort, marched on the morning of the 14th instant for Berhampore, and a grilling hot march they are likely to have.

Assistant Surgeon Brooke, of the Superintending Surgeon's Department, proceeded a few days ago to Nursapatam, to assume charge of the troops at that post.

Doctor Currie, who lately arrived here sick from the field, embarked on board the Amelia for the presidency, on medical certificate.

Charge." For conduct highly unbecoming the character of an officer and a gentleman, in having, at Kamptee, on Oct. 7, 1846, attended the funeral of the late Ens. W. Thorpe, of the 4th regt., in a state of intoxication."

"The above being in breach of the Articles of War." HENRY W. BRETON,

(Signed)

Lieut. Col. Commanding 4th (King's Own) regt. Kamptee, Oct. 10, 1846.

Upon which charge the Court came to the following decision. "The Court having most maturely weighed and considered the whole of the evidence brought forward in support of the prosecution, as well as the evidence upon the defence, is of opinion:"

Finding.- -"That the prisoner is guilty of the charge." Sentence.- -"The Court having found the prisoner guilty, as above stated, doth sentence him, the said Captain J. S. Shortt, of the 4th regt. to be severely and publicly reprimanded, in such manner as his Excellency the Most Noble the Cominander-inChief may be pleased to direct; and further, to lose (3) three steps of his regimental rank, by being placed next below Capt. W. C. Sheppard, of the same regiment."

Approved and confirmed, (Signed)

TWEEDDALE,

Lieut. General.

Remarks." The Commander-in-Chief regrets that at a time when every exertion is made, and happily with some success, to suppress the offence of drunkenness among the soldiers of the army, an officer should be found so forgetful of his duty, and regardless of that which is due to his own character, as to set so pernicious an example of intemperance to those who ought to look up to him with sentiments of respect.

At all times this debasing vice is most humiliating, but more especially on an occasion such as that referred to in the charge, when the officers of the station were assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to a deceased brother-officer by following his remains to the grave.

66 His Excellency cautions Capt. Shortt seriously to reflect on the reproach he has brought upon himself by this public exposure, and hopes that he will in future see the necessity of greater propriety of conduct.

"These remarks will be read to Capt. Shortt by his commanding officer before the officers of the regiment, when he will be released from arrest, and will return to his duty."

(Signed)
