and as the former rugged and steep declivites before existing are moved, the whole face of the area will be improved, by rendering the margin of the tank uniform, and which will then present a very fine sheet of water.-Ibid.

FREE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND'S INSTITUTION.-On Monday last, after a month's vacation, this Institution was re-opened, in the presence of a number of European and American ladies and gentlemen. The greater part of the pupils and students, alike in the school and the college departments of the Institution, at once reappeared in their proper places. There were also many new candidates for admission. All being assembled in the great hall, they were addressed at some length, first by Mr. Hawkins of the civil service, and next by Dr. Duff, respecting their various duties, privileges, and responsibilities. It was an animating spectacle to witness such a multitude of native youth assembled in one place, eagerly bent on the improvement of their own minds by the pursuit of our European literature, science, and philosophy, in intimate conjunction with the evidences and doctrines of the Christian faith. The Institution has commenced its operations for the present year with an accession of strength, by the arrival of the Rev. Mr. McKay, who, after the absence of two years, has lately returned from home in recruited health and strength.Ibid. Feb. 6.

THE WEATHER.-They have had rain and cold weather in Bombay as well as in Calcutta, and at Meerut, according to the Mofussilite, there was a violent hail-storm on the evening of the 26th ultimo, which prevented the review of the artillery taking place on the next day. They have also had hail at Moorshedabad, and the same cloud may perhaps pay us a visit in Calcutta. ---Ibid.

EARTHQUAKE. Another shock of earthquake was felt in Calcutta, the night before last, at about 12 o'clock.-Ibid.

FIRE.-On Saturday night, between twelve and one, the police discovered a fire had broken out at a native's hut in Moocheparah, which continued for some time, and destroyed in all twelve huts.-Ibid. Jun. 8.

THE PERJURY CASE.-The case of perjury against a young man, who was accused of having obtained a marriage license on behalf of a run-away couple, on a false oath taken before Dr. Dealtry, the Archdeacon, has been dismissed by the magistrate, Mr. Hume, who is of opinion that such a charge could not be made out according to law under the circumstances, as the chief point requisite to be formed would be that the oath was falsely taken before a functionary legally competent to administer it. As the Archdeacon is not so authorised, the false oath in the case in question, even if taken as charged, could not constitute perjury. - Ibid.

ADOPTION OF THE BURMESE LANGUAGE AT ARRACAN.-The Standard states that the Burmese has been adopted as the language of the civil and criminal courts of Arracan. This is an important step towards increasing the efficiency of the administration of that province, and will effect wonders towards reconciling the people to our rule. The use of the Oordo language in the Arracan Courts was infinitely more absurd than that of the Persian in the Moffussil Courts.

THE LATE ACCIDENT AT LOODIANAH.-It appears that the subscriptions for the relief of the sufferers by the falling of the barracks at Loodianah reached the sum of Rs. 6,600, which enabled the committee to afford effectual assistance to every sufferer. After fully covering the losses incurred by the soldiers' families, and paying over nearly £200 to Messrs. Cox and Co., to be given in sums of from £5 to £25 to sixteen men invalided on account of the falling of the barracks, after their arrival in England, there remains Rs. 2,612, which is to be invested for the benefit of a boy and girl who remain cripples for life.Hurkaru.

MOFUSSIL.

AGRA, JAN. 18.-The 34th N. I., arrived here on the 11th inst. Mr. J. D. Inglis, our joint magistrate, proceeded on the 14th inst. towards the Governor-General's camp, having, it is said, been appointed an under-secretary to Government. -H. M. 21st (Fusiliers) marched from Agra on the 15th inst. en route to Cawnpore: not exactly known what European regiment comes here in their place.*-The 1st Co. 1st Batt. Artillery leave Agra on the 19th inst. en route to Lahore.Rajah Lall Singh is expected here on the 28th inst., and preparations have been made in the fort for his reception. He will of course be under the charge of Mr. Commissioner Robinson, who is also agent to the Lieut.-Governor N. W. provinces. The patrolling officers of the Customs Department in this zillah, and their native subordinates, are to mount a uniform to distinguish them from other officials.-Two (2) more of the run*H. away convicts have been brought in; there are then 11 yet at large. Rumour says that Doongur Singh has died of his wounds. -Delhi Gazette, Jan. 23.

ALLYGHUR, JAN. 16.-The Rajah of Ladwa arrived here on the 13th inst., and departed this morning en route to Allahabad. His presence created great excitement among the natives here, who were all anxious to have a glimpse of the great Rajah, whom the Feringhees have had the assurance to make a prisoner of. It was certainly a melancholy sight to see a man who once had command over so many broad acres sitting before his tent with only a few attendants, and having a talk with his sepoy guard. But it is his own fault, and he has, like many other people, only himself to thank for his misfortunes.-G.”— Ibid, Jan. 20.

DELHI.-The ground vacated by Rajah Lall Singh and his cortêge (not so stately, by the bye, on a closer inspection, as it appeared at a distance, and as it was stated by us to be) on Sunday morning, was occupied on Monday by the deposed Rajah Indur Singh of Nabha. He has, we understand, received permission to reside in the Company's territories, east of the Jumna, or anywhere south of Delhi, on the west side, with an allowance of Rs 4,000 per mensem. He talks of taking up his abode at Bindrabun.

We are happy to see that considerable activity prevails in several directions about Delhi in the construction of roads. Those round the town, towards Muttra, and to the Kootab, have all been commenced upon in good earnest, and these works do much credit to our active joint magistrate. They would doubtless have been commenced on long since had not the legitimatefunds been diverted to the construction of the tank now generally known as the Ellenborough folly, a very appropriate name, seeing that the tank is there, but no water in it now, nor for months past!-Delhi Gazette, Jan. 20.

The detachment of the 2nd Grenadiers, which acccompanied the ex-Rajah of Nabha to Delhi, was relieved here by one from the 30th N.I., under Lieutenant Sage, and the deposed chief moved on to his destination yesterday.

Arrival.-18th Jan., Asst, Surg. H. B. Buckler, 4th Troop 2d B., H. A., in progress to Meerut.

Departures, 21st Jan., Ensign Garden, 2d Grenadiers, with a detachment 2d Grenadiers on his return to Umballah ;-Asst. Surg. H. B. Buckler, 4th T. 2nd B. H. A., in progress to Muttra ; 22nd, Lt. S. Sage, 67th N.I., with a detachment 67th N.I., escorting the ex-Rajah of Nabha.-Ibid. Jan. 23.

BENARES.-Her Majesty's 24th Foot, 700 strong, marched into this station, from Ghazeepore, the day before yesterday, at 8 A.M., under command of Col. Stoyte, and left this morning at 5 o'clock en route to Agra; the men appear to be all young, healthy, and in high spirits.

A detachment of the H. C.'s Artillery, 325 strong, arrived here yesterday morning at 7 o'clock, we believe chiefly recruits and others about to join the different companies at Meerut, Agra, and other stations, and are expected to leave this, en route to Cawnpore, on Monday morning; the men appear mostly young and healthy, the casualties having been only three.

The 21st Regiment Native Infantry, commanded by Lieut. Colonel W. W. Foord, was inspected yesterday morning (the 21st instant) by Major-General Alexander, Commanding the Benares Division.

WEATHER.-Westerly winds-gradually becoming warmer. The crops look healthy, but stunted in growth in some places, owing to there having been no rain since the close of the monsoons. Thermometer ranging from 62 to 70 degrees.-Recorder, Jan 22.

From the 22nd to the 24th instant a sensible change was felt of the days being very warm, and not so cold mornings as a week or two ago. Thermometer from 62 to 72 degrees. 25th.-Cloudy-thunder-drizzling rain, with evident signs of continued bad weather. Thermometer, at noon, 70 degrees. The Natives are of opinion that rain at this time of the year is inimical to the crops. Rain all night.

26th.-Thermometer 62 to 69 degrees. A fine fall of rain all night and still drizzling. Rain all day, the ground perfectly saturated.

27th.-Cleared up, a south-westerly wind, a cutting breeze at

gakoond. Some say that his highness will visit the Rajah of Nepaul, and open a negotiation for the marriage of one of his daughters to one of the Nepaul potentate's sons or nephews.

The Rajah Heera Singh, a Punjaub chief, has returned from Gya.

This morning (the 30th January) the Rajah of Nepaul paid a visit of ceremony to the agent of the Governor-General, Major Carpenter. The rajah was escorted by his own cavalry and infantry, and a heterogeneous posse of followers; the band playing the "Duke of York's March." The music was not concordant, but the howling notes of that uncouth instrument, the turung, chiming in with the band, made sounds discordant enough to summon up all the spectres from the regions below. Captain Phillips went beyond the bridge to receive the King of the Mountains, and the Rajah of Sattarah joined the cavalcade with formidable and grotesquely-dressed followers and retainers. The whole combined cortège, after crossing the Burna bridge, presented a scene of great novelty and motley grandeur and pageantry. To describe the tag rag and bob-tail portion of the armed chief's followers, we must possess the erudition and flippancy of our metropolitan contemporaries the grandmother and the twinkling luminary of the east, who can give the description in the language of Jenkins, Punch, or any other laughter-exciting genius of the present age. The maharajah was received with the usual honours and etiquette by the agent to the Governor-General, and, after half-an-hour's audience, returned to the city in the same pompous order.

On the 31st ultimo, the Ameers of Scinde, Meeri Mohummud Khan, Meer Yar Mohummud Khan, and Mere Shere Mohummud, arrived here from Huzaieebaugh, with about 200 followers, accompanied by Dr. (Collen)? The Ameers intend staying a fortnight, and will then return.

The mother of Nuwab Moonah Jan, who died some six months ago, has also departed this life at Chunar.

The Kallygunga passed up this morning, in tow of the Thames, and delivered sixty-six packages; also the Sutledge, in tow of the Berhampooter, after delivering twenty-five packages.

Arrivals.-28th January, Mr. J. R. Douglas, from Calcutta ; 29th, Miss Fagan from Calcutta ; Colonel Gwatkin, Misses Gwatkin and Wilson, from Calcutta, and Captain Brougham, from Meerut; 1st Feb. Lieutenant-Colonel Home, and Mr. R. M. Lamb, from Calcutta.

Departures.-29th January, Colonel Gwatkin, Misses Gwatkin and Wilson, to Allahabad, and Captain Brougham to Calcutta; 31st, F. W. Place, Esq., to Cawnpore; Mr. W. Bryant, to Allahabad; Ensign Powyss, to Shahjehanpore, and Lieutenant Lemarchand, to Sultanpore.-Ibid. Feb. 2.

MOORSHEDABAD.-The Bhasker states, on the authority of one of his correspondents at Moorshedabad, that the young Nabab Nazim has expressed his intention of visiting Calcutta, in the course of the present Bengallee month. It is said that his object is to convince the Government of India that he is now of age, and can have, therefore, an entire control over his vast estate.-Hurkaru, Jan. 28.

BANKOORAH.-On the 20th instant, the son of the Peskar, in the Magistrate's Court, went to the Government school as usual, but did not return at the hour when the school closed. His relatives and friends commenced to seek for him, but without success. The night passed. On the morning of the 21st, his body was found lying on the plain adjacent to the Free Schoolhouse. By tracing out, it has been found that the boy, who was twelve years old, was returning from the school, but taken back from the roads by the duftery of the school to his house, where he and his brother joined to murder him, for the sake of gold bangles which he had on his person. Both of these rogues have been apprehended and confessed their crime. The vigilance of Mr. Lock, and the labour he took in tracing out these fellows, were certainly great, and do high honour to him.-Hurkaru, Jan. 27.

SHEKAWATEE.-A native correspondent maintains that the country lately the scene of the differences between the Rajah of Seeker and his natural brothers, is still in a state of great disorder, and that the return of the troops to Joonjnoo is the only plan for restoring peace. It ought certainly to be a matter of proud satisfaction to Major Forster to find his services so valuable, and the Government have apparently taken the same view as we expressed some time ago, by ordering him back to the scene of his former labours. We are told by our correspondent that the partial success which has attended the late rescue from the Agra Jail (and which is said by him to have been effected with the aid of a number of dakoits collected from Beehaneer, Jodhpoor, and Shekawatee, by the very brothers whom the Rajah of Seekur has been attempting to put down, and not by that chief himself, as was erroneously supposed when the occurrence was first noted) has had the effect of creating a

66

very unsatisfactory feeling in the minds of the population of Shekawatee, many of whom have become, to use the words of our correspondent, so proud and so insolent that they laugh at the Sirkar, and are known to have severally returned to their homes with little fear of detection under present circumstances." Another native authority tells us that the Kotwal of Agra returned from Jaipoor after an ineffectual journey in pursuit of the dakoits. As we have mentioned the return of the Shekawatee brigade to Joonjnoo, we cannot omit a brief notice of the very becoming terms in which the Governor-General intimated his orders on this head. Major Mackeson was desired to inform Major Forster that his lordship had every reason to be satisfied with the conduct of his corps since it was called to the frontier, and where it had maintained the high character it had already acquired. Lord Hardinge observes that special mention was made of the corps, in reference to the late operations on the Sutlej, in the British Parliament, and that it had received the thanks of the Governor-General, of the Commander-inChief, and of Major-general Sir H. Smith, for its gallant conduct on the frontier. - Delhi Gazette, Jan. 27.

GOVERNMENT GENERAL ORDERS.

Camp Behranee, Jan. 12, 1847.-The Right Hon. the GovernorGeneral is pleased to direct, that from the date on which this order may be promulgated at Lahore, the Scinde rate of allowances, as laid down in general orders by the Governor-General, under date the 7th instant, will be drawn for the fighting-men of the force only.

2. All other persons, of whatever class, belonging to the native mustered establishments attached to departments, or to the troops occupying Lahore, will receive the ordinary pay and field batta of their respective grades, whether in garrison, or on occasion of marching, or taking the field.
