BELLARY, DEC. 23.-The annual examination of the children (boys and girls) of the orphan school in the fort took place, agreeably to notice, on Friday last, the 18th instant. Not having been present myself, I am unable to afford more than a brief outline of what took place. The attendance on the occasion is represented not to have been so great as might have been expected, but among those that were present were Capt. Elphinstone and lady, the Rev. Mr. Wardlaw and lady, Mrs. Abraham, Miss Paine, &c. &c. The examination was conducted by the Rev. Dr. Powell, and embraced scripture history, geography, arithmetic, map drawing, &c. The answers given by the children, and the knowledge they evinced, seem to have gratified all present. My informant adds that the readiness with which the female children answered the scriptual questions put to them, and the manner in which they supported their replies by quotations from the sacred volume, were beyond all praise. I hear that the funds of this valuable institution are low in consequence of the little encouragement it has met with from the community, and the formation of a rival institution in the Pettah under the the patronage of the Missionaries of the London Missionary Society. Whatever may have been the cause of its decline hitherto, I trust that the appeal which will shortly be made to the public both from the pulpit, and by means of a printed report of the institution, will be cheerfully responded to by them, and that they will not suffer it to be said that a valuable institution like the Bellary Orphan-school, which has been the refuge of many poor and destitute orphans, has failed for want of their support and co-operation.

A new butt is being built for the artillery to the westward of Bellary, near the race-course. The old one, which is to the eastward, is too much in the vicinity of private dwellings and the high road to Kurnool, to admit of an extensive ball practice being carried on without danger to human life. I am informed on good authority, that the old butt will shortly be blown up, and that the officer commanding the artillery expects to find more than a thousand shells in the interior of it.

The present route from Bellary to Hurryhur, it is said, will be changed, and the Tappal station at Hospet removed to Ramanumullay. This will cause a saving of distance of nearly ten miles between Bellary and the village of Higgadal, at which the new line will join the old one. There will be some fears of delay by the runners having to cross the mountainous range in which Ramanumullay is situated, but by having a stage at the bottom of it in the hamlet of Bavihully, this difficulty may be greatly obviated, while the facility of communication with the Sanatarium which the good people of Bellary would possess, would far outweigh any disadvantages that may result from the proposed (and I believe sanctioned) alterations.

The Rev. Mr. Thompson is expected to reach Bellary from Hurryhur on Christmas-day.

Arrivals. Mr. Mellor, collector, and Dr. Jopp, civil surgeon, Mr. Fothergill, and Lieutenants Robertson and Horne, of the artillery.

Departures. Dr. Macdonall, superintending surgeon, on a tour of inspection, and A. G. Tweedie, Esq., to Adonie.Athenæum, Dec. 29.

GUNTOOR, JAN. 3.-The deplorable state of many of the principal roads in the district, even the high northern one, has been for some time a subject of general complaint; but I am happy to say that an efficient revenue surveyor has been deputed, as a preliminary measure, to report on the main one from Pondigul called the Hyderabad road, and to which the attention of the engineers' officers is solicited.

Assistant-surgeon Pickering, from Chicacole to Madras, passed through this station; Assistant-apothecaries Hatton and Macqueen, the former to the more northern part of the division, and the latter to the medical charge of Condapilly; also, the Rev. H. Taylor, to resume charge of his office as chaplain of Masulipatam. His lady accompanies him, and was much improved in health.

The arrival of our newly-appointed Assistant-collector B. Harrison is soon expected, and it is rumoured that he will in due course have control of the general survey of this zillah, which was commenced and subsequently stopped temporarily. — Athenæum, Jan 12.

after a stay of a few days, proceed en route to their station, Nursapoor.

Mr. Newell, the H. A. C., an indefatigable revenue officer, together with his establishment, leaves this shortly on a revenue tour to Innacondah and other villages comprising a portion of the western part of this district.

Our worthy collector and family were at Condaneed Hills the other day, and have now proceeded to Prellepaud (the first stage from this, on the Manras road), on Jamabundy duties.

It was with some concern I learned the other day, that the funds of that excellent institution "Bishop Corrie's Grammar School" at Madras, were low, and that an appeal had been made to the public. This document has since come to hand, and I have much pleasure in informing you that though the community here is limited, a handsome sum has been raised; Mr. Collector S-alone having with his usual liberality added thereto 300 rupees. Need I add that it would indeed be gratifying to see similar munificence evinced by other benevolent friends, to such a good cause.-Ibid. Jan. 14.

TRICHINOPOLY, DEC. 16.-The important news of the week is that the amateurs of Trichinopoly have treated the station with a play. It came off on the 14th, and drew a bumper house. In newspaper parlance, all the youth, beauty, and fashion of Trichinopoly were present to witness the exertions of the gentlemen of the "sock and buskin," to amuse and to be amused. We had first "The wreck ashore," a Drama in two Acts-" A Dance between the Pieces," and the Farce in one Act-" Catching an Heiress," wound up the entertainment for the night. The principal amateurs played their parts well.-Athenæum, Dec. 22.

DEC. 22.-The want of a chaplain at this station has been for some time a source of considerable regret to the church-going people of Trichinopoly. At St. John's the Rev. Mr. Hickey regularly officiated every Sabbath morning since the Rev. Mr. Stone left us; in the evening the cantonment church was closed and divine service performed in the fort. The attendance of the gentry on such occasions was comparatively numerous, though the distance I doubt not kept away many a family from the missionary's ministry, who certainly enjoys no sinecure, having to preach four times a week in English and Tamil, besides superintending the schools and transacting all the business of the mission. Mr. Hickey is a most indefatigable missionary. The inconvenience heretofore experienced by the cantonment residents will no longer be felt, as the Rev. Mr. Alcock has arrived among us. He reached Trichinopoly on the 16th, and is putting up at the general's. Dr. Brooking has also arrived, and he too is living with our veteran commander. The doctor is en route to Madras, I believe, and has come down from Tanjore, where he was employed by the Rajah on a salary of Rs. 500 per mensem as physician to the hospital recently built by his Highness, who also entertains on the establishment a corps of native doctors, and thus secures to the patients both European and Native practice.—Ibid. Jan. 2.

DEC. 3.-Mr. Blackburne has arrived here on a flying visit, and has for the time being taken up sejour with Mr. Onslow. It is not certain whether this gentleman proceeds to Madras or returns to Madura. One report is to the effect that he goes from Trichinopoly to Poodoocottah. I am happy to inform you that Mr. Cadell has recovered from his recent attack of illness; it is bruited abroad that he will shortly leave the district on medical certificate. One version has it that he returns to England, another that he intends proceeding to the Cape, while a third assigns the Neilgherries as his destination,―these are mere on dits to be received for what they are worth. A detachment of sick Europeans is expected from the depôt at Tranquebar-a medical officer having been sent down to accompany the men to this place; another assistant apothecary has been warned for duty to proceed with the sick of the 2nd Eur. Regt. to Madras.— Ibid. July 7.

JAN. 6.-As 'avant-couriers of the most noble the Commander-in-Chief, we have had among us for some days together the adjutant-general of the army, the quarter-master general, and the military secretary. Mr. Onslow and Captain Lawford have proceeded to the Anicut to await the arrival of his lordship, who after inspecting that great work of art, and, it is said, visiting Seerangham, will make his entré in Trichinopoly to-morrow morning. They are whitewashing and cleaning the public room where the marquis will hold his levee. On the 8th there is to be a grand entertainment in honour of his lordship; other fêtes are spoken of, of which you shall be duly apprized in my next. The governor does not remain here longer than four days, during which time he will take his sejour with the collector.

You will be grieved to learn the demise of his Highness the Rajah of Travancore. Among the native princes of India he was distinguished for his superior intelligence and extensive acquirements in oriental literature. He is not unknown to fame

in the European world, for you must be aware that the deceased rajah maintained an observatory at considerable expense, and that Mr. Caldecot was for a length of time his highness' astronomer. The ephemeris emanating from the Travancore Observatory was a valuable contribution to astronomical science, and the Madras New Almanac for several years was supplied with diagrams and calculations of the eclipses of the sun and moon from the same quarter. The rajah also supported an English school on a scale of liberality that, perhaps, has few precedents in other native states. He was a steady and staunch advocate of education, the friend and patron of men of letters, and in the administration of his principality he was guided by an enlightened policy; in a word, he was a prince who united in himself all those qualities that fail not to endear the memory of a ruler among his subjects; he was just, generous, and equitable, and his loss will, doubtless, be greatly deplored by the Travancoreans as a national calamity: they may with great propriety exclaim,— "Hush'd be the voice of private woe,

The public weeps."

Ram Row, the deceased prince, will be succeeded by his brother Vurtandha, the Elliah Rajah, who is the only surviving heir to the guddhee. The new sovereign is half European in his pursuits and tastes. He has credit for considerable intelligence.

Accounts from Madura state that the failure of the periodical rains has induced numbers of the ryots to abandon a great portion of their lands, aud that the consequence will be a deficiency in the revenue to the tune of two lakhs of rupees.

The governor arrived this morning at Trichinopoly under the usual salute. A great concourse of natives were, from an early hour, in attendance at the river side to have a sight of his lordship. The marquis's cortège consisted of the principal civil and military gentlemen of the station; and the cavalcade proceeded to the collector's residence, where, I believe, a grand dejeûné awaited the noble and illustrious guest. At night there was a party at Mr. Onslow's. The marquis reviewed the 2nd E. L. infantry, a corps that is in the highest state of discipline, and must have called forth the admiration of the Commander-inChief. During the day the marquis received few visitors. order was issued, rather late in the evening, that his lordship would inspect the two native regiments here-the 44th and 45th.

An

A party of sick Europeans of the 2nd E. L. I., consisting of fifteen men, leaves Trichinopoly for the Mount on the 11th, in charge of a steady non-commissioned officer, accompanied by Assistant Apothecary Stutz in medical charge.

VIZAGAPATAM.-December 15.-On the evening of the 9th instant a fire broke out in the lines of the 41st regiment N.I. when about thirty houses were burnt down. A native woman, I am informed, being unable from age and infirmity to make her escape from the devouring element, got severely burnt, and I believe subsequently died. A fire also broke out on the evening of the 12th instant, in the Parchery of the European veterans, and eight or ten houses were consumed-the fire, I hear, originated from the carelessness of a servant; fortunately during the conflagration, there was very little wind blowing, or the devastation would have been much greater; the exertions of a certain subordinate judicial functionary were on this occasion deserving of great commendation, he having not only hastened people on with water, but been seen himself to carry pots of it to the scene of destruction.

A Hunter, Esq., assistant to the collector and agent of Vizagapatam, proceeded a few days ago to Vizianagram to relieve

Fane, Esq., who is to repair to this station, to assume charge of the office of the principal assistant to the collector, in room of A. Mathison, Esq.-Athenæum, Dec. 22.

DECEMBER 23.-I regret to have to inform you of the death of the lady of Lieut..col. Campbell, C. B., of the 41st regiment, N.I., which melancholy event occurred at Waltair on the 17th instant. Her remains were on the following evening consigned to their last resting-place.

The Lord Bishop of Madras, together with his domestic chaplain (the Rev. C. Whitehead) and Dr. Clementson, arrived here on the 13th inst. in the Honorable Company's Pilot brig Coleroon, Commander F. Ross.

His lordship purposes confirming the several candidates who have presented themselves for confirmation, on Saturday next, the 26th inst. ; and on Sunday next it is his lordship's intention to deliver a sermon in the Fort Church.

Col. C. F. Smith, commanding European veterans, is about proceeding on medical certificate to the Presidency, preparatory to applying for leave to return to Europe for the benefit of his health the command of the veterans will devolve on Major C. Fladgate, as next senior officer.

Assistant-surgeon C. W. Pickering, zillah surgeon of Chica
