PREFACE.

In early life, the writer being perplexed with hearing that part were elected, and the rest reprobated, and yet all were free agents, gave herself to the intense study of the holy scriptures, for the purpose of finding whether they taught predestination or free agency: but holding the faith of endless misery, prevented her getting hold of the key of knowledge; consequently, she made but little progress, excepting the commit ting to memory of a considerable number of passages; so af ter studying for many years, and finding the attempt fruitless, the search was abandoned with a resolution not to look into the bible to learn anything but duty.

The writer was for many years seeking for experimental religion, yet made but little improvement, except in storing the mind with portions of the bible; her faith was weak and wa vering, on account of hearing the same preacher at one time hold forth that we must be saved by grace alone, and at another time by works—and at another, that grace and works were co-operators in the act of saving souls: he made no distinction between salvation and grace, and rewards for good works; and it so agitated her mind that it discouraged her; for being pre viously taught that reason was carnal, she was afraid to exer:
