THE ORDER

FOR THE ADMINISTRATION OF

THE LORD'S SUPPER,

OR

HOLY COMMUNION.

The Minister standing before the Communion Table shall say to the Congregation present,

DEARLY beloved Brethren, The Lord's Supper is an act of grateful and affectionate commemoration, by which we profess a faith in the truth, and a love of the holiness of Jesus of Nazareth: gratitude for the benefits which his mission has conferred upon mankind, and an earnest desire to conform to the doctrines and obey the commandments of our Lord.

A gratefully believing heart, a righteously disposed intention, and a pious and well ordered mind prepare us for engaging worthily in this solemn service; wherefore I invite all that do truly and earnestly repent of their sins, and intend to lead virtuous lives, following the commands of God, and walking in the steps of his holy child Jesus, to draw near with faith, and partake of this holy ordinance, to the strengthening of their hearts in every good word and work; making with me a humble confession of past unworthiness, and past neglect.

¶ Then shall this general Confession be made by the Minister and Communicants, kneeling or standing.

ALMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, Judge of all men; we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and transgressions, which we from time to time have committed by thought, word, and deed against thy Divine Majesty, provoking thy just displeasure against us. We do earnestly repent and are heartily sorry for these our mis-doings, have mercy upon us most merciful Father, forgive

us all that is past, deliver us from all our sins, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and bring us to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then the Minister shall read the following account of the Institution; saying,

HEAR the account of the institution of this ordinance, as it is found recorded in the first epistle of Paul to the Corinthians, the eleventh chapter, from the 23rd to the 26th verses.

I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat; this is my body which is broken for you; This do in remembrance of me. After the same manner, also, he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the New Testament in my blood; this do ye, as oft as ye drink it in remembrance of me.

Here may be introduced, when thought expedient, an ADDRESS from the Minister to the communicants, after which the following Prayer shall be said by the Minister alone, all kneeling or standing.

Let us pray.

ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, by whose gracious assistance, and for our benefit, thy beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, was obedient even to the death upon the cross; who did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of his death, until his coming again: hear us, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we may receive this bread and wine in grateful remembrance of his death and sufferings, and of thy great mercy to mankind in sending him, thy chosen messenger, to turn us from darkness to light, from vice to virtue, from ignorance and error to the knowledge of thee, the only true God, whom to know is life eternal. Amen.

Then the Minister, breaking the bread, shall deliver it to the
Communicants; using first these words:

AS a solemn testimony, in the presence of each other, and before God, of our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, let us take and eat of this bread in remembrance of him.
