ven make us indifferent to the claims of duty on earth; nor spiritually and heavenly-mindedness assume the character of insensibility or indolence. While fervent in spirit, may we also be active in business; and while as strangers and pilgrims we pass the time of our sojourning here in fear, may we also learn to provide things honest in the sight of all men, to be kindly affectioned one toward another, in brotherly love preferring one another, to rejoice with them that do rejoice, and to weep with them that weep.

O Lord, thou alone canst guide us thou alone canst lead us in the way everlasting: thou alone canst preserve us from the extremes into which we are ever liable to fall. Guide us, we beseech thee, with thy counsel: make us to understand the way of thy precepts: remove from us the way of lying: and incline our hearts to perform thy statutes always, even unto the end. Our souls cleave unto the dust,. but do thou quicken us according to thy word. Incline our heart unto thy testimonies, and not unto covetousness. Turn away our eyes from beholding covetousness, and quicken thou us in thy way. Thou art our portion, O Lord; teach us good judgment and knowledge; and let all our ways be directed to keep all thy commandments.

Thus, O Lord, we entreat thee to lead us this day. Uphold us, we beseech thee, according to thy word. Be our God, and the God of all our friends, and of all whom we should remember in thy presence: And all that we ask is for Christ's sake, for whom we bless thee, and who is all our hope; and to

whom, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, be glory for ever.

SATURDAY EVENING.

UNTO thee, O Lord, who art a refuge for the oppressed, and a very present help in time of trouble, we this evening draw nigh, laden with the burden of our sinfulness and wants, but encouraged by thine own assurances and promises, to cast our burden upon thee, that thou mayest sustain it. Have mercy upon us, O Lord; have mercy upon us: and though we are unworthy of thy notice and regard, be pleased to look upon us in the face of Jesus Christ, and for his sake be merciful to our unrighteousness, our sins and our iniquities remember no more.

We bless thee for all thy past goodness; we thank thee that we have been preserved during another day and another week. Continue thy goodness, we beseech thee, towards us; and let not the greatness of our unworthiness rise up to heaven in testimony against us. Be with us through this night. Prepare us for the exercises of thy day and of thy house : let thy holy Spirit dispose our minds for solemn and special approaches to thy presence and throne. During the silence and solitude of this night, and even when we are unconscious of thy care, let his influence be exerted on our minds. May we have reason, when we awake, to say, "we will bless the Lord who hath given us counsel, who hath proved and in

structed us in the night season." With minds awake to the design of thy holy day, may we arise in the morning, and enter on the duties of the Sabbath. And during the whole course of the day, and while engaged in its various exercises, may we be conscious of the presence and grace of Him who is the life of ordinances, and the Lord of the Sabbath; and who hath promised to satisfy the longing soul, and to fill the hungry soul with goodness.

Nor would we pray for ourselves alone. gracious to all who are in any way connected with us. Take them under thy protection this night. Spare them to see the light of thy day. Sanctify them for thy service; and fulfil in their experience, by means of thy word and ordinances, the whole good pleasure of thy goodness, even a work of faith with power.

Have compassion, we beseech thee, upon the young and the inexperienced. While their heart is yet tender, stretch forth thy hand and save them from the dangers to which they are exposed, opening their eyes, and turning them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them that are sanctified by faith that is in Christ Jesus.

Instruct the ignorant. May they who are feeling after thee, if haply they may find thee, be assisted in their search after the good way in which they shall find rest to their souls. May their doubts be removed, their perplexities allayed, their fears dispel

ed. May the Lord himself be their shepherd; and may he renew their strength, restore their souls, comfort their hearts, and lead them in the paths of righteousness, even for his own name's sake.

To the consolations of thy grace we coinmend the afflicted and distressed in mind, body, or outward estate. By all the dispensations of thy providence accomplish, we beseech thee, the purposes of thy grace in behalf of thy people. May their afflictions lead them away from broken reeds and empty cisterns, to God the glory of their strength, and the lifter up of their head: may they, even in their darkest hours, feel that they are in the hands of a wise and a compassionate heavenly Father; and though no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but rather grievous, nevertheless afterward let it work the peaceable fruit of righteousness, to them that are exercised thereby.

Be with thy genuine people everywhere. As their day is so let their strength be. Break not the bruised reed quench not the smoking flax. Increase the comfort and the holiness of thy people. In all their tabernacles may there be the voice of joy and health; and on every dwelling-place of Mount Zion, and on all her assemblies, may the Lord create a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night; and upon all the glory let there be a defence.

O do thou who art the God of all the families that dwell upon the face of the earth, look in compassion upon those dark places which are still the ha

bitations of horrid cruelty. Stretch forth thy hand, and pluck many as brands from the burning. Send out of Zion the rod of thy strength. Lift up thy voice in power, and say to the north," give up, and to the south, keep not back, bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth.”

And while thus thou hastenest the glory of the latter day, increase the interest and zeal of thy people in the accomplishment of thy promises to thy church. For Zion's sake, let them not hold their peace; and for Jerusalem's sake, let them not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that

burneth.

These, our prayers, we present before thee. Hear us in heaven, thy holy habitation; and when thou hearest, forgive, and answer, and accept of us, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our only Saviour and Mediator; to whom, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, be glory for ever. Amen.
