In the year ending March 31, 1856, the total expenditure on the Customs establishments, including the Coast-guard and the Revenue cruisers, was 1,257,2471. 16s. That of the Inland Revenue Office was 1,320,8217. 6s. That of the Post-Office was 1,554,7991. 1s. That of Woods, Forests, and Land Revenues was 21,708l. 14s. A total of 4,154,576l. 17s.: and 253,2367. less than the estimates. NATIONAL DEBT.-On March 31, 1855, the total amount of the National Debt of the United Kingdom was 751,645,818/. 18s. 11d. I the year ending March 31, 1856, new debts were contracted to the amount of 27,988,306l. 12s. 2d., and 4,321,430l. 11s. 11d. were paid off; leaving a total of 775,312,694l. 19s. 2d. The annual charge upon this sum is 27,555,8211. 4s. 9d. The debt is composed of the following stocks:£. IRELAND. The net produce of the Revenue of Ireland paid into the Exchequer in the year 1855, was 6,056,2721., of which 1,919,1091. were derived from Customs Duties, 2,308,1257. from Excise, 441,300l. from Stamps, 1,049,8081. from Property and Income Tax, 26,000l. from the Post-Office, 300l. from small branches of hereditary revenue, and 311,630l. from miscellaneous sources, including repayment of advances. The expenditure for the same period was 6,152,0177. LEGACY DUTY.-The Legacy Duty for the year 1855 amounted to 1,586,8317. upon a capital of 62,601,259/. in Great Britain. In Ireland the amount was 77,1731. upon a capital of 3,309,8291. In the same year the stamp duties on probates, administrations, and testamentary inventories was 1,268,2341., of which 1,095,362l. was raised in England, 88,9317. in Scotland, and 83,9417. in Ireland. RACE-HORSES.-The amount of duty received on Race-horses was 4,452. for 1852; 4,865. for 1853; 4,4831. for 1854; 4,8667. for 1855; and 5,451. for 1856. The HORSES AND CARRIAGES.-In the year 1854 the total number of horses "paying taxes" in England and Wales was 432,746. number of four-wheeled carriages "paying taxes" was 65,497; and the number of two-wheeled carriages was 127,383. The total amount of duty was 582,2531. According to this return all the four-wheeled carriages in London and Westminster are but 3,283, and 6,424 in Middlesex. The total number of horses is 35,751. The return is probably not meant to include hired cabriolets and omnibuses, which certainly "pay taxes," otherwise it must be extremely incorrect. INCOME-TAX.-The net amount of Property and Income Tax for the year ending April 8, 1855, was 14,358,090l. Of this sum 12,086,5221. was raised in England: 5,365,9487. under Schedule A; 692,8627. under Schedule B; 1,446,4947. under Schedule C; 3,851,0221. under Schedule D; and 730,1967. under Schedule E. In Scotland there was raised 1,140,730l., of which 656,8051. was under Schedule A; 58,396/. under Schedule B; nothing under C; 386,133l. under Schedule D; and 39,3967. under Schedule E. Ireland contributed 1,130,8381., of which 693,7071. was under Schedule A; 54,2387. under Schedule B; 81,1057. under Schedule C; 251,670l. under Schedule D; and 50,1187. under Schedule E. Scotland exceeds Ireland by a trifle, the excess arising from Schedule D, which exceeds that from Ireland under the same head by 130,000l. INDIA: INCOME AND EXPENDITURE.-For the year ending April 30, 1854, the total amount of income was 26,375,1977., of which 16,621,2301. was land revenue, 1,226,0511. customs duties, 2,572,9967. tax on salt, and 4,478,653l. tax on opium. The expenditure was 28,419,3147., an excess over income of 2,044,1177. The cost of collecting was 4,243,986l.; the civil, political, and judicial charges were 4,270,3927; the military charges were 10,450,8991.; the interest on debt was 2,504,2971.; the dividends to proprietors of East India stock amounted to 632,970l.; and the sum spent for buildings, roads, and other public works was 659,7717. NAVAL EXPENDITURE FOR 1855.-The total amount expended was 15,017,591. Of this 2,468,8497. was for wages; 1,765,037/. for victuals; for building and repairing ships, naval stores, &c., 3,264,2871.; conveyance of troops, &c., 3,493,6641.; wages to artificers at home and abroad 1,048,2037.; post-office (packet service) 763,569.; prisoners of war 34,1477. A separate return, prepared also by the naval department, states the total amount of the post-office packet-service to be 756,4871. The estimates for the naval service for 1856 were 12,148,6417. LIGHT DUTIES.-The total amount received in the United Kingdom for the year 1855 was 313,9267., of which 251,2931. were from over-sea ships, and 62,6337. from coasting-vessels. INCLOSURES.-The Eleventh Annual Report of the Inclosure Commissioners for 1856 states that the whole number of applications since the passing of the Act for inclosures, exchange of lands, partitions, &c., have been 1,726, of which 279 are within the last year. The total number of acres comprised in the applications for conversion or inclosure was 470,058, of which 25,903 were applications in 1855. Of the total number of applications 973 had been disposed of, the average expense of the proceedings for inclosures being 167. 17s. 7d. II.-Currency.
