So Josephus, from a reading much more probable than that of the present text: which has been variously corrected and amended, to make it speak something frater mi, quia...Nam ille Int. habet un like sense. feminine gender, agrees not with David, but who had fled and gone to Geshur, had been with David's soul; and partly by comparing there three years, (39) king David longed this with other places, where the same verb for Absalom; for he was comforted conis used, and the soul expressed, as Psalm cerning Amnon, seeing he was dead. lxxxiv. 2; cxix. 81. David beschlossen, cf. 1 Sam. xx. 7, 9, 33, is probable but cold and remiss, endeavours et quoad formam Ex. xxxix. 32) egredi, i. e., to pursue after Absalom, and to fetch him sanguinis vindices emittere adversus Abfrom his grandfather's to receive condign salomum, mærebat enim Amnonis mortem. punishment, he now gave over thoughts of Illud quidem verissimum est, verba recepta it. Thus the same verb, and that in the significare non posse: desiit Davides rex same conjugation, is used in the same man- egredi contra Absalomum (sensu supra ner, 1 Kings iii. 1, he made an end of notato), erat enim de morte Amnonis conbuilding. It is to be objected, That the solatus. Ita enim leges grammaticæ pro Hebrew verb is of the feminine gender, and therefore doth not agree with king David, which is masculine. It may be answered, that enallage of genders is a most frequent figure; and as the masculine gender is sometimes applied to women when they do some manly and gallant action, Exod. i. 21, so the feminine gender is sometimes used of men when they show an effeminate tenderness in their disposition; which is the case here, as some learned Hebricians have

noted.
