AGRICULTURAL REPORT

FOR MARCH.

THE mildness of the weather, since our last report, has been peculiarly favourable to the young lambs. The farmers are no where at a loss for food for their flocks; indeed, so mild a season cannot be remembered. In the southern parts of England, and in the immediate neighbourhood of Brighton, the grasses are very luxuriant; the whole extent of the South Downs exhibits a beautiful carpet of green, and the appearance of the arable lands promises a rich reward to the agriculturist. Sowing coutinues with unabated vigour; in many parts of England the seed-time is already concluded. The young clovers have held a fine plant from the mildness of the winter. The hawthorn, lilac, and most of the early shrubs, have already begun to sprout; and, should the blossoms be nipped by no untimely frosts, we venture to predict a most abundant crop of every description of indigenous fruits. The depression of the prices of agricultural produce still, we lament to say, continues.

It has, we understand, been resolved by the Committee on Agriculture to adopt the following Scale of Protecting Duties:

:

1. That the future import price of wheat shall be seventy instead of eighty shillings. 2. That a duty of twelve shillings be imposed upon imported wheat, when the price is from 70s. to 80s.

3. That a duty of five shillings be imposed upon imported wheat, when the price is from 803. to 85s.; after which, the duty shall be reduced to one shilling.

4. That a further additional duty of five shillings shall be imposed upon imported wheat, for the first three months after the ports open, and when the price is from 70s. to 85s.

PRICE OF SEEDS, &c.

We have almost a general dullness in our Seed Trade. White Clover is again cheaper; Foreign Red is also lower; but good English maintains its price. Trefoil, unless the brightest sample, sells heavily at a further reduction. Ribgrass is more plentiful. Ryegrass, Sanfoin, &c., remain nearly as last quoted.
