At Halfton, in Shropshire, J. Mytton, efq; a man of frict honour and probity, and of a truely amiable difpofition. Though qualified to thine in the fenate, he reduced his mind to enjoy the comforts of a private station. Here he exercised the virtues of an univerfal philan thropy. He cloathed the naked; he fed the poor in the late f-afon of fcarcity; he found employ for the ind Arious and funferised liberally towards-their relief. Amongst his neighbours he mixed with great affability and gentleness of manners. In fh it, he was the gentleman, the men of tafte, and, what is better, the good Chriftian. In his houfe he main tained the rules of order and regularity; in his church, of which he was patron, was exhibited a ftriking proof of this regularity of conduct, by the general attendance of all his d. meftics. His private charities were liberland extenfive; and his having bequeathed confiderable legacies to the neighbouring and other parishes, how him not unmindful of them in his latest moments.

very few readers, he has produced feven vé. lumes of "Melanges Literaires," containing various tracts on different topics. In these productions, learning, genius, and wit seem to go hand in hand, like the Graces, forming an immortal wreath for the author. It is impoffible to beflow a fufficient encomium on his tranilation of "Excerpta from Tacitus." He has equalled the arduous precifion of the original and attained what a prodigious number of Iterati before him at empted in different languages without fuccefs. He was honoured with the patronage and friendship of feveral monarchs, a circumftance that could never awake the leaf fymptom of vanity in his untainted heart. The Empress of Ruffia, wish. ing to entroft him with the education of the Grand Duke her fon, propofed to fettle on him 40col. per ann. for life, befides the rank of ambassador extraordinary, while he should refice at her court. D'Alembert thanked her Imperial Majefty, but declined her intended favour in modeft and fubmiffive terms. This fact is well known, and will ever be recorded as a fingular inftance of philofophical fortitude, against the powerful incentives of gold and ambition. He was not a moral impoftor like Rouffeau, who, under the fpecious glofs of a fantastical w fdcm, concealed the most ridicalous price and intolerable conceit. D'Alem bert had not the pedantic parade of virtoe, but poffeffed the actual fubitance; and while in his intellectual faculties he appeared a fuperior be

In him the accomplishments of a finished gentleman were added to the amiable virtues of an affectionate husband, a tender parent, a finrere friend, and an indulgent matter. Society muft feel the lofs of fo rare and exemplory a character, who, as he inherited fuch virtues, died univerfally beloved, revered, lamented, and most by those who knew him beft. In his library were the collections of his aucle, the rev. Mr. Wm. Mytton, for an history of Shropshire, in one vol. folio, a continuation of Mr. Edw. L'oyd's, together with a vaft col-ing, in all his worldly concerns he discovered lection of pedigrees, parochial notes, and a multitude of fine drawings of tombs, churches, &c. Mr. Mytton has left a widow, whofe fenfibility has been ever diftinguished by the most ardent affection. She has one fon at Wett mitter fchol, a promifing youth of 16 years of age; and one daugi ter. The following is fent us as an Exter pore Effufion:

O, Mytton! while to brighter realms you foar
(The anx ous cares of life ter ever o'er),
Caft down one look, and fee around thy bier
What crowds attendant pour the heartfelt tear!
What tides of forrow in one landed stream,
Rolls o'er thy memory, and embalms thy name!
Can this be bitter? No; 'tis life, is gain;
And all that's fad is the furvivor's pain.
Fer, O! thy virtues forin'd the finish'd plan,
Of all that's good, that's dignified in men.
The hulbin-parent, and unfhaken fried,
Lofe half their charms in thy lamented end;
For where's the man can equal want fupply,
So much refpe&ted live, fu honour'd die?

27. Moní. D'Alembert, fecretary to the French academy, &c. &c. one of the ableit mathematicians of the age; and what is rather extraordinary, he joined to his pr found and truly-aftonishing skil in the bitrect sciences, all the accomplishments of an elegant, vivacious, and entertaining writer. He was one of the principal editors of the "Encyclopadia," and, befides his mumerous mathemati cal works, which will tranfmit his name to the remotest posterity, though within the reach of

the meekness of a lamb, and the fimplicity of a do e.
