Yet with dearer delight, from his home in the North,
On the fields of his harvest the Yankee looks forth,
Where crook-necks are coiling and yellow fruit shines,
And the sun of September melts down on his vines.

Farmer's Calendar.

THE harvest moon rises for five,
or six nights, at just about the
same time, as if it had come to a
stand-still. This odd habit was
noticed in old times, long before it
be right handy for getting in the
was known why. It was found to
crops in hot countries, before the
ten hour law was ever thought of,
so they called it the harvest moon.
Isn't it a shame to have to sit np

nights to protect a melon patch or
a peach orchard? If a thief takes

a purse, it is bad enough, but to

nurse and watch and tend a bit of
choice fruit, a new kind perhaps,
that has cost years of thought and
then to have it snatched from our
experiment to bring forth, and
grasp by stealth, is ten times worse.
It shakes our faith in men, and
especially in boys and schools, and

makes us almost doubt if there has

been any real gain in morals and civilization itself. To be sure the law is strong enough to punish, BEG. but it is slight use to shut the door stationary, 6 C. of the cage after the bird has 25 Tu. & C. 23. gr. hel. 1. S. flown.
