Farmer's Calendar.

THE early grasses come into bloom in this month of roses, and must be cut if they are to be made into the best of hay. It will be time enough to take the red top and the timothy next month, but the June or Kentucky blue grass, the sweet-scented vernal, the tall oat-grass, the meadow fescue, and some others, are ready a week or two before that, and they don't re

main long at their best, and if not cut they lose some of their nutritive properties. The corn for the silo ought to go in now, and a few acres well tilled will give an immense yield of fodder to be cut and packed down for fall and winter use. We know of no plant to equal corn for ensilage, and if allowed to get its full growth, and come into bloom, it is full of rich, sweet juices that are well kept and greatly relished by stock of all kinds. Those who have silos must get ready to fill them by sowing a plenty of corn now. Hungarian |

grass, to be sown after the middle

of this month, keeps well in silos, but it is just as well to cut it the middle of August, and cure it for hay. After the strawberries have gone, let the runners extend, and strike root for fresh vines. Plant

melons, and look out for a good lot of them.

troops, 1881.

THE rule is to try to do no more than we can do well. It is the best

work that pays best in the long run. Now we are in the midst of

haying, and some of us are through with it. Why not look about and see what we can do to help on the hoed crops? Weeds grow just . where we don't want them. They

rob us of the results of our work and the manure we have put on to help the plants that we want, and farming is a struggle against them. Let us not weary in well-doing, but keep up courage to fight them to the end. Plant food costs too much to let it go to waste. When the hold and clear up the lots, make a hay is all in the barn, let us take new farm of it, if need be, so that when the next year comes round we may grow more grass and get it easier. Isn't there an old wall that might as well be sunk? Isn't
