THE seeds of grasses that ought to be sown now are very small, and need but a slight

covering, but they must have a

good seed bed to lie in. Can't be too nice in laying down land. A fine loose soil, in good tilth, with a smooth surface, looks well after the roller has pushed down the seeds. I wouldn't sow any grain with grass seed. It does better with

out.

The grain takes the heart out of the land, and the grass ought to have the whole of it. Grass or hay is the mainstay with us, and it doesn't do to wink this fact out of sight. There are few better crops than Winter grains may go in now. rye. The straw is of quick sale, and brings a high price. It doesn't cost much to raise it. The Fairs come off soon, and the boys will be all the better for a day's rest and change. It is a good plan to go and see 20. Days and nights nearly what is going on. May get a

THE teams are strong now, and all right for a good day's work. It is best to plough in the fall, where the land is level and not too apt to wash. Stiff or clay lands are all the better for the weathering they get turned up to the frosts. Get in the beets and the mangolds. It is safe to let the swedes grow till next month. Farmer's Calendar.

IT is time to close up the field work and get ready for winter. The last of the roots must come in, and the harvest will be ended. The plough can run, and it is a good plan to turn up the sod to the weather. It does it good to freeze and to thaw. If you laid in a store of dry muck in the hot days of summer, now is the time to begin to use it. Muck is a good thing to have. It saves a great deal of waste. It is worth its

cost to use on high land, at any

time, but more than that to use

in the barn and under it. Then,

12th. Look out for too, we can often make a ditch drain to carry off the water, and to get at it that will serve as a Rain or a drain in low land is always in snow. use. Don't forget to trim the grape vines and the apple trees. It is just the best time to do it. The fall feed is worth as much on the ground as it is to be eaten off. It serves as a mulch to protect the roots of the grass, and 't won't do to gnaw it down too close. Better begin on the winter stores of hay than to leave the ground bare as the cold comes on. It costs more than it comes to. Now is the time to look out for the winter's supply of wood. It is a good plan Cold. to have a year's stock on hand.
