The night was winter in his roughest mood,
The morning sharp and clear.-The vault is blue
Without a cloud, and white without a speck
The dazzling splendor of the scene below.

Farmer's Calendar.

THE sign of this cold month, the Fishes, was all very well when it was first used on the banks of the Nile, but we could do better now. How would a girl on skates or a white bear do? A fit sign would send a chill through every limb. But cold or warm, the chores must be done, the wood cut, the cows, the pigs and the hens fed. Wood means warmth, and so does food. There is life in heat, and all life must have food of some kind. Then there

is a food of the mind and the heart as well as of the body. "Twon't do to forget that. Growth is the law of life, and all growth

must have something to feed on. There is time now to think a little, and see if there isn't some brain food within our reach. To grow strong and great, to

to lead happier lives, and to make ourselves more useful to mankind. We need to go a little out of self to gain the true end of life.

Farmer's Calendar.

THE work of spring is near at hand and we must get ready

A

for it. It is best to look round and see what can be done. coat of paint, here and there, is a good thing well bestowed. A day's work on the fences and the walls will save time that! will be worth more by and by. There is no need of idle. hours now. The true way is to make everything tell, as they say. There is such a thing as thrift on the farm as well as off

it, and it is a wonder what a

difference it makes. It is not very nice work to pick rocks, but it is a thing that must be done, and there is no better time than the last of this month. It is fun to see how easy many rocks that are firm in the sod at other seasons, come up now that the ground is moist and soft, and a live farmer can take hold and clear up the mowing lots just as well as not. No use to spoil the scythe when the crow bar will do the work so well. We used to say about the middle of this month "Now is the

time to tar the trees to head off the canker worm," but now it is, "Brush on the printers' ink." It is a sure cure if taken

in time. It is worth while to take more pains with our fruit trees.
