great problem is to make it so, and that does not turn on out

ward circumstances so much as some suppose. The rich are not, as a class, happier than the poor. Mental activity is the source of contentment, and the busy brain makes the happy mind. The wisest of all petitions is, "Give me neither poverty nor riches." When Webster was asked what he thought was the best way to get through a spell of hot weather, his reply was, Keep busy, keep the mind at work, and you won't think of it. Life hangs heavy, and drags, on those who have nothing to do. There is always work on the farm; and these long winter evenings and crisp days can be filled so full that they will seem all too short, and we wonder where they have gone. Keep a sharp eye on the

stock. Cows well wintered are half summered. Study their comfort. Give them good bedding, a few roots at fixed hours, and a daily carding. The barn cellar needs looking after. Mix

the muck and the loam. Settle

up old scores. It is a good plan to pay as you go; but if this I can't be done, keep the accounts straight at least and get no deeper into the mud.
