WEEDS are the curse of our

lands. They grow here and there, crowd upon our crops, and sap the moisture and the rich juices from the soil. They rob us more slyly than any other set of thieves. They are starting now, and need a close watch. and the cultivator on the go, Keep the hoe, the horse-hoe, and nip them in the bud. There is no other way to get back what it has cost us to plant. I like to sow the swede soon after the

With wide breadth of mangolds sown the middle of May, and a good lot of swedes this month, we can get a large stock of cattle through next winter. to raise roots is to keep the land and the manure free from weedseed. If you use none but old and fine compost, or ashes, or some well-made stuff that you buy, you can steer clear of a

host of weeds; it costs less than dung from the yard. The true way is to work the land quite I clean and free from weeds, and to use no foul ground for root crops. Cut the first crop of grass soon after the middle of

the month. The red clover will

then be in bloom; cut and cure

it so as not to waste its leaves.

Don't dry it too much in the hot

sun. It will cure in the cock.
