time to get the advantage of the March winds to dry it. It is always better to drive business than it is to have business drive you.

Farmer's Calendar.

THEY say it is the early bird that catches the worm, and so it is he who gets the best early vegetables who takes the cream of the market and sets the best table at home. Such being the case, the hot-bed must be made about the first of the month. A good hot-bed can be made with a depth of a foot of manure at

the bottom. Look out and have

the manure all right before it is to be used. Pitch it over in time to have it well heated. It is of no use to put cold manure in a hot-bed. It is the heat that is to do the business. It is worth while to look about and get a few good points from the market gardeners. Just before the frost comes out of the ground is a good time to spread manure on the mowing lots. "Twont do to cut up the land with heavy cart-wheels, and so it is best to move while the C. ground is hard. Get it on bewinds, fore the spring rains come, and

Farmer's Calendar.

THE garden needs prompt attention now. As soon as the frost is well out of the ground, it is time to plant early pease. There is nothing that will start this crop along and carry it out so well to full bearing as fineground bone scattered freely in the drills. The seeds of beets, turnips, and radishes can be sown about as early as pease, if the garden is a little sheltered and the land is light and warm. If you have a rich, warm, and mellow soil, early potatoes can go in towards the end of the month. A little superphosphate in the hill starts the young plants and gives you a crop earlier than barn manure. A medium or even a small-sized whole potato for seed will yield

than cut seed. For early crops of any kind the soil must be well pulverized, and the manure mixed with the soil to the depth that is spread broadcast, well

of from four to six inches. The

strawberry bed is to be uncovered, and the paths hoed out as soon as the danger of freezing is over. So, too, the asparagus bed should be dug over as soon as the frost is out of the ground. Wood ashes are good for it.
