WE can judge now as to the extent of the hay crop. If it is likely to be short, it is not too late to sow millet or Hungarian grass enough to make up for it. Sow three pecks of seed to the acre on light, warm, rich soil; and, if you want it to do its best, give it land free from weeds and well tilled. A light dressing of some special fertilizer, or a heavy coat of wood ashes, will give it a good start, and in six weeks or so you can cut one of the best crops of grass of the whole farm. As soon as it is off the land, the first week in August, turn over the stubble, scatter on a few bags of fertilizer and a few ounces of turnip seed. This is one good way to get a large lot of first-class food for stock, and you'll find it'll come handy by New Year's day. Last year the hay crop was short. A drought the roots of the grass. Those who two years running had killed sowed plenty of oats, to cut and cure for fodder, hit the nail on the head. They had barns well filled, and made up their minds that the oat crop was just the thing for them. And so it was. It saved them from distress. Sow corn for fodder in rows from three to four feet apart, at the rate of three pecks of seed to the acre. It needs sunshine. We are apt to get it too thick.
