Calmly we look behind us, on joys and sorrows past;
We know that all is mercy now, and shall be well at last;
Calmly we look before us; we fear no future ill;
Enough for safety and for peace, if Thou art with us still.

THE chores must be done from day to day. Cows need great milk. The cold is apt to pinch care now, or they will fall off in them and dry them up. roots come in well here. the round turnip first, and make go through this month if you can; then the swede will do for a month or two. Mangolds are better after the first of March. The card is a good thing for cows now, and a warm bed at night. Set the woodpile to rights. It takes a heap of wood to go through the cold months, and it won't come up of itself.

When

all the chores are done, there is still time to read and to go to the Farmers' Club. That is a thing not to be lost sight of. There are many hours after the sun sets, more than you need for sleep, and the true way is to make the most of them. We must keep in mind all the time that the man is more than his farm, or his house, or his stock. He owes a duty to his home and to his own soul, as well as to his purse, and it will not do to lose sight of this. He has but one life to live here, and let him make sure that he lives it right. So take account of stock and foot up the bills for the year. must know how we stand, from time to time, as we go along.
