The morrow was a bright September morn;
The earth was beautiful, as if new-born;
There was that nameless splendor everywhere,
That wild exhilaration in the air,

Which makes the passers in the city street
Congratulate each other as they meet.

Farmer's Calendar.

THE rule is to sow grass seed
If sown
the first of this month.
late in the fall it does not have

time to get a firm hold on the

soil when the ground freezes.
Seed sown now will do well in
nine cases out of ten. If sown
in spring it is apt to die from
the hard drought, or to be choked
with weeds, if the land is foul.
Sow it alone, and not with oats.
Seed costs too much to risk it
with a rank crop of grain, which
makes it weak with its shade, so
that when the grain is cut it will
not stand the hot sun. We can
do much to fix up the place, get
out rocks, and smooth off the
grass lots, ready for the mowing
machine. Harvest comes on
now
now. Towards the end of the

month it will be time to top the
corn. It sends the growth into
the ears, so as to make it get
ripe a little earlier. But it is
as well to cut it up at the ground
and stook it. Early fruit may
be picked and sold. The grape
ought to be ripe by this time.
Save seed to plant next year.
Top dress the grass lands. It is

a good plan to plough in the fall,
and if it is done now the soil will
Work better in spring, than if it
is put off later. Don't fail to go
to cattle show. It is a good
place to learn. A farmer ought
to take pride in the Fair.

MISS MULOCH.

Farmer's Calendar.

THERE is no time to lose now. We must dig potatoes, get in and husk the corn, pick the fruit, and fly round till the work is done. Here and there a good crop of grass can be cut. Rowen is good for calves and lambs,

and for cows in milk. We like to have a lot of it on hand, it is

so sweet and full of juice. Keep the plough in the furrow as much as you can. The more we can plough in the fall the less will the work press in the spring, and the team is strong now to do the work well. It is a great help to break up the sod in the fall, for we shall have both hands full in May. It is safe to pull the mangolds at the end of the month. They will not stand a very hard frost. Top them and stack them in close piles on the

field, so that they can be covered as the cold nights come on. If they are stored in the cellar now, where the air is close, they will be apt to heat and sweat, and that may hurt them. The for a few days more, and the swede will keep on its growth frost will not touch that just yet. If the canker worm has reached your trees, tar the trunks about the middle of the month. Good printers' ink is better than tar, and if it is too thick, mix in some crude rock oil.
