4h 24m; eclipse ends at 5h 33m. Will
be visible throughout Europe, Asia,
and Australia; and on the Eastern
and Pacific Oceans.
December 31. SUN partially eclipsed
and visible at Greenwich. Begins at
1h 40m P.M.; greatest phase at 2h 35m
P.M.; ends at 3h 28m P.M.; magni-
tude (sun's diameter 1) = 0.388.
This eclipse is visible throughout Great
Britain, France, Spain, Newfoundland,
and on the North Atlantic Ocean.

VENUS will be an morning star until July 13, the time of her superior conjunction with the Sun; and an evening star after that date.

MARS will be in conjunction with Venus on September 7.

JUPITER will be in opposition to the Sun on October 7; he will be in conjunction with Venus on April 16.

SATURN will be in opposition to the Sun on October 18. The splendid rings are visible. The planet will be in conjunction with Venus on May 1.

IN THE SEVERAL COUNTIES OF ENGLAND AND WALES.

By the Act 1 Will. IV. c. 70, it is enacted that "in the year 1831, and afterwards, the Justices of the Peace in every county, riding, or division, for which Quarter Sessions of the Peace by law ought to be held, shall hold their general Quarter Sessions of the Peace in the first whole week after the 11th October, in the first week after the 28th of December, in the first week after the 31st of March, and in the first week after the 24th of June." The following list has been computed according to this rule.

The Act 4 and 5 Will. IV. cap. 47, allows a discretionary power to the Justices of Peace as to the time of holding the Spring Quarter Sessions, and empowers them to alter the day for holding the Sessions, so as not to be earlier than the 7th of March, nor later than the 22nd of April. The dates given below are, therefore, only provisionally fixed, and may be altered.

An important alteration as to the re-
ceipt of dividends was made in August,
1869. Under this arrangement any holder
of stock in the public funds, residing
within the United Kingdom, may have the
dividend warrants forwarded by post, upon
making application to that effect to the

chief accountant of the Bank of England,
not later than 1 month and 5 days before
the date on which the dividends are due.
THE TRANSFER DAYS
are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thurs-
day, and Friday.

Tickets for preparing Transfer of Stock must be given in at each Office before 1 o'clock.-Private Transfers may be made at other times than as above, by paying 2s. 6d. extra for each Transfer; but no Transfer can be made after 1 o'clock on Saturdays. May 1 and Nov. 1 are closed days for the purposes of transfer. For Transfer of Bank Stock the books are shut for at least ten days before the dividends become due; in all other Stocks the Transfers can be made at any time (except on the holidays); but a month before the dividends become due they are made ex dividend.

EXPENSE OF TRANSFER. Bank Stock, not exceeding £25 98.; above that sum, 12s.

Private transfer days, 2s. 6d. extra. Transfers in Consols and other Government Stocks are exempt from duty.

HOLIDAYS KEPT AT THE PUBLIC OFFICES IN 1880. At the EXCHEQUER all holidays are abolished except Christmas Day and Good Friday. EXCISE, STAMPS, AND TAXES OFFICES.

Good Friday, March 26. Day appointed to be kept as the Queen's Birthday. Coronation Day, June 28. Prince of Wales's Birthday, Nov. 9. Christmas Day, Dec. 25. All the above days are also ordered to be kept as holidays by the officers and servants of the Custom House and the Dock Companies of the United Kingdom, except the Prince of Wales's Birthday and the Coronation Day. At the Stamps and Taxes Office, the Restoration of Charles II., May 29; Whit Monday and Tuesday (May 17 and 18) are kept in addition.

BANK HOLIDAYS.

Good Friday, Easter Monday, Whit Monday, First Monday in August, Christmas Day. Note.-Bills of Exchange falling due on Good Friday and Christmas Day are payable on the previous day; those due on the other holidays being payable on the following day.

Mercury, is in the constellation Sagittarius; and on the 15th, rises at 7h 0m A.M.

Venus, in the constellations Scorpio and Sagittarius is visible in the mornings; on the 15th, rises at 4h 50m A.M.

Mars, in the constellation Aries, is a conspicuous object; on the 15th, sets at 3h 12m A.M.

Jupiter, in the constellation Aquarius, is visible in the evenings after sunset; on the 15th sets at 8h 39m P.M.

Saturn, in the constellation Pisces, is visible in the evenings; on the 15th, sets at 11h 15m P.M.

Uranus is in the constellation Leo; on the 15th, passes the meridian at 3h 6m A.M.

Neptune is in the constellation Aries; on the 15th, passes the meridian at 6h 51m P.M.
