30 Q. How doth the Spirit apply to us the redemption purchased by Christ?

A. The Spirit applieth to us the redemption purchased by Christ by working faith in us a, and thereby uniting us to Christ in our effectual calling b.

a Ephes. ii. 8. By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.

b Ephes. iii. 17. That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith.

1 Cor. i. 9. God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ.

31 Q. What is effectual calling?

A. Effectual calling is the work of God's Spirit a, whereby, convincing us of our sin and misery b, enlightening our minds in the knowledge of Christ c, and renewing our wills d, he doth persuade and enable us to embrace Jesus Christ, freely offered to us in the gospel e.

a 1 Tim. i. 9. Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling.

b Acts ii. 37. Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their hearts, and said

unto Peter, and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren; what shall we do?

32 Q. What benefits do they that are effectually called partake of in this life?

A. They that are effectually called do, in this life, partake of justification a, adoption b, sanctification c, and the several benefits which, in this life, do either accompany or flow from them.

a Rom. viii. 30. Moreover, whom he did predestinate them he also called; and whom he called, them he also justified; and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

b Ephes. i. 5. Having predestinated us to the adoption of children, by Jesus Christ unto himself.

Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.

33 Q. What is justification?

A. Justification is an act of God's free grace, wherein he pardoneth all our sins a, and accepteth us as righteous in his sight b, only for the righteousness of Christ, imputed to us c, and received by faith alone d.

a Rom. iii. 24. Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ.

Ephes. i. 7. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.

b 2 Cor. v. 21. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

c Rom. v. 19. As by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

d Gal. ii. 16. Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ.

34 Q. What is adoption?

A. Adoption is an act of God's free grace a, whereby we are received

into the number, and have a right to all the privileges of the sons of God b.

a 1 John iii. 1. Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us that we should be called the sons of God!

b John i. 12. As many as received him to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.

Rom. viii. 17. And if children, then heirs ; heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ. 35 Q. What is sanctification?

A. Sanctification is the work of God's Spirit a, whereby we are renewed in the whole man, after the image of God b, and are enabled more and more to die unto sin, and live unto righteousness c.

a 2 Thess. ii. 13. God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation, through sanctification of the Spirit.

b Ephes. iv. 24. And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

e Rom. viii. 1. There is therefore now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

36 Q. What are the benefits which in this life do either accompany or flow

from justification, adoption, and sanctification?

A. The benefits which in this life do accompany or flow from justification, adoption, and sanctification, are assurance of God's love, peace of conscience, joy in the Holy Ghost a, increase of grace b, and perseverance therein unto the end c.

a Rom. v. 1, 2, 5. Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2. By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 5. And hope maketh not ashamed, because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

b Prov. iv. 18. The path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

c 1 John v. 13. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God, that ye may know that ye have eternal life.
