Greek Homosexuality

Harvard University Press, 1989 - 244 oldal
To what extent and in what ways was homosexuality approved by the ancient Greeks? Here is the first serious examination of this question, written by an eminent classical scholars. The author explores all the sources of information we have: vase paintings, archaic and classical poetry, the dialogues of Plato, speeches in the lawcourts, the comedies of Aristophanes. He shows what restraints were imposed by law, and looks at the Athenians' idea of beauty in the human body, their notion of manliness. A discussion of female homosexuality is included. His judicious analysis offers an understanding of Greek distinctions and practices that will well serve anyone interested in classical art and society. -- From publisher's description.
