FOREWORD

Throughout the nineteenth century no published discussion of American education failed to mention and pay tribute to the contribution of West Point in that field. Since 1900 scholars have been inclined to overlook the Military Academy, partly because the objective of the institution seemed to place it out of the main stream of educational development, and partly because there was a lack of accessible material upon which to base an appraisal. This pamphlet is designed to correct the mistaken perspective and to supply the deficiency.
