Cobb, Sanford 'Hoadley. The rise of religious liberty in
America: a history.

$4. net.

N. Y. Macmillan 1902. 20+541 p. O. The first comprehensive and systematic treatment of the subject, especially full for the colonial period, with brief account of the revolution and the final separation of church and state, and preliminary sketch of the nature of the American principle of religious liberty and of the relations of church and state in Europe (based upon Innes). Essential outlines are well presented and the tone is fair, but errors of detail are numerous and original sources (save for Connecticut and New York) are scantily used. Note also P. Schaff's "Church and state in the United States".

Am. Hist. R. 8:350 (W. M. West); Nation 76:119.

PHILIP P. WELLS, MAY, 1903.
