him, and repofe in him, as their reft, because he bath dealt bountifully with us; we will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord: For the Lord is good, his mercy is everlasting, and his truth endureth to all generations.

We will blefs the Lord at all times, yea, his praise fhall continually be in our mouths; we will fing unto the Lord as long as we live; and we hope to be fhortly with thofe bleffed ones who dwell in his houfe above, and are still praifing him, and who reft not day or night from faying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty.

CHAP. V.

Of the Fifth Part of Prayer, which is interceffion, or addrejs and fupplication to God for others.

[ocr errors]

UR Lord Jefus hath taught us to pray, not only with, but for others: And the apostle hath appointed us to make fupplication for all faints; and many of his prayers in his epiftles are for his friends : And we must not think that when we are in this part of prayer, we may let fall our fervency, and be more indifferent, because we ourselves are not immediately concerned in it, but rather let a holy fire of love) both to God and man) here make our dévotions yet more warm and lively.

1. We must pray for the whole world of mankind, the loft world; and thus we must honour all men, and according to our capacity do good to all men.

We pray as we are taught, for all men, believing that this is good and acceptable in the fight of God cur Saviour, who will have all men to be faved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth, and of Jefus Christ, who gave himself a ransom for all.

O look with compaffion upon the world that lies in wickednefs, and let the prince of this world be caft out, that has blinded their minds.

Olet thy way be known upon earth, that barbarous nations may be civilized, and thofe that live without God in the world may be brought to the fervice of the living God; and thus let thy faving health be known unto all nations; let the people praise thee, O God, yea, let all the people praife thee: O let the nations be glad and fing for joy, for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon

earth.

O let thy falvation and thy righteousness be openly fhewed in the fight of the heathen, and let all the ends of the earth fee the falvation of our God.

O give thy Son the heathen for his inheritance, and the uttermoft parts of the earth for his poffeffion; for thou haft faid, it is a light thing for him to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Ifrael, but thou wilt give him for a light to the gentiles.

Let all the kingdoms of this world become the kingdoms of the Lord, and of his Christ.

2. For the propagating of the gospel in foreign parts, and the enlargement of the church, by the bringing in of many to it.

O let the gofpel be preached unto every creature; for how fhall men believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how fhall they hear without preachers? And how fhall they preach except they be sent ? And who fhall fend forth labourers, but the Lord of the harveft?

Let the people which fit in darkness see a great light, and to them which fit in the region and shadow of death let light fpring up.

Add unto thy church daily fuch as fhall be faved; enlarge the place of its tent, lengthen its cords, and ftrengthen its takes.

Bring thy feed from the caft, and gather them from

the weft; fay to the north, give up; and to the fouth, keep not back; bring thy fons from far, and thy daughters from the ends of the earth. Let them come with acceptance to thine altar, and glorify the houfe of thy glory; let them fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows.

In every place let incenfe be offered to thy name, and pure offerings; and from the rifing of the fun to the going down of the fame, let thy name be great among the gentiles, and let the offering up of the gentiles be acceptable, being fanctified by the Holy Ghost.

O let the earth be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the fea.

3. For the converfion of the Jews.

Let the branches which are broken off not abide ftill in unbelief, but be grafted in again into their own olive tree.

And though blindness is in part happened to Ifrael, yet let the fulness of the gentiles come in, and let all Ifrael be faved.

Let them be made to look unto him whom they have pierced, and that they may turn to the Lord, let the veil which is upon their hearts be taken away.

4. For the eastern churches that are groaning under the yoke of Mahometan tyranny.

Let the churches of Afia, that were golden candlefticks, which the Lord Jefus delighted to walk in the midft of, be again made fo.

Reftore unto them their liberties as at firft, and their privileges as at the beginning; purely purge away their drofs, and take away all their tin, and turn again their captivity as the ftreams in the south.

5. For the churches in the plantations.

Be thou the confidence of all the ends of the earth, and of those that are afar off beyond the fea; and let them have the bleffing which came upon the head of Jofeph, and upon the crown of the head of him that was feperated from his brethren, even to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills.

Create peace to thofe that are afar off, as well as thofe that are nigh.

And let these that fuck of the abundance of the feas, and of the treasures hid in the fand, call the people to the mountain, that they may offer facrifices of righteoufnefs.

6. For the univerfal church, wherever difperfed, and for all the interefts of it.

Our hearts defire and prayer to God for the gospel Ifrael is, that it may be faved.

Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion, build thou the walls of Jerufalem. Peace be within her walls, and profperity within her palaces: For our brethern and companions fake, we will now fay, peace be with

in her.

O that we may fee the good of the gospel Jerufalem all the days of our life, and peace upon Ifrael. And that thus we may have reafon to answer the meffengers of the nations, that the Lord hath founded Zion, and the poor of his people fhall truft to that.

Save thy people, O Lord, and bless thine heritage: feed them alfo, and lift them up for ever. Give strength unto thy people, and blefs thy people with peace; with thy favour do thou compafs them as with a fhield.

Grace be with all them that love the Lord Jefus Chrift in fincerity; for thou knowest them that are thine: And give to all that name the name of Christ to depart from iniquity.

We pray for all that believe in Chrift, that they all may be one; and fince there is one body and one fpirit, and one hope of our calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptifm, and one God and Father of all; give to all chriftians to be of one heart, and one way. Let the word of the Lord in all places, have a free courfe, and let it be glorified.

7. For the conviction and converfion of the atheists, deifts, and infidels, and of all that are out of the way of truth, and of prophane fcoffers, and thofe that dif grace chriftianity by their vicious and immoral lives.

K

O teach tranfgreffors thy ways, and let finners be converted unto thee.

O give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth, the truth as it is in Jefus, the truth which is according to godlinefs, that they may recover themfelves out of the fnares of the devil.

Let those that are as fheep going aftray, return to Jefus Christ, the fhepherd and bishop of our fouls. Shew thofe fools their folly and mifery, that have faid in their hearts, there is no God, and that are corrupt, and have done abominable work.

Lord, maintain the honour of the fcripture, the law and the teftimony, and convince those who speak not according to that word, that it is because there is no light in them; magnify that word above all thy name; magnify the law, magnify the gospel, and make both honourable.

Let thofe that will not be won by the word, be won by the conversation of chriftians, which we beg may be fuch in every thing, that they who believe may not be convinced of all, and judged of all, may be brought to worship God, and to report God is with them, of a truth.

8. For the amending of every thing that is amifs in the church, the reviving of primitive chriftianity, and the power of godlinefs, and in order thereunto, the pouring out of the fpirit.

Lord, let thy fpirit be poured out upon thy churches from on high, and then the wildernefs fhall become a fruitful field, then judgment fhall return unto righteoufnefs, and all the upright in heart fhall follow it. Let what is wanting be fet in order, and let every plant that is not of our heavenly father's planting be plucked up.

Let the Lord, whom we feek, come to his temple like a refiner's fire, and fuller's foap, and let him purify the fons of Levi, and all the feed of Ifrael, and purge them as gold and filver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteoufnefs, plea
