THE unsuccessful issue of the ill-conducted enterprise of the Chevalier de St George in 1715, did not extinguish the hopes of his friends in Scotland; they looked forward to the period when some favourable opportunity would occur, and their efforts to restore his family to the throne would be crowned with success. The existing government, however, watched with such anxious care every movement of its supposed enemies, that it crushed in embryo all the attempts that were made to disturb the public tranquillity. Notwithstanding its vigilance, a secret correspondence was kept up between the Chevalier and his friends, in which he encouraged them to hope that their expectations would be realised; he flattered them also with being soon |
