Fleeing Vienna as a refugee in 1937, Gerhart Ladner (1905-1993) went on to teach at The Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies, Fordham, and the University of California at Los Angeles. He was a winner of the American History Association's Award for Scholarly Distinction and a member of Zentraldirektion of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica. His books range from studies of papal iconography to this, his pioneering work.
