But when Herod was dead, behold, an 19 angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life. Would not be comforted.] And he (Reuben) returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go? And they (Joseph's brethren), sent the coat of many colours. And he (Jacob) knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces. And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days. And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted: and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him. Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my lord, behold, now thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life, and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die. CHAPTER III.

IN those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness 1

CHAP. III.- Those days.] Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cæsar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea, and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. Lu. iii. 1, 2.

From

John the Baptist.] Verily, I say unto you, among them that are born of women, there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist, notwithstanding, he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. Mat. xi. 11. This is John the Baptist (said Herod the tetrarch), he is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. Mat. xiv. 2, &c. And they (the disciples) said unto "him" ("Jesus"), Some say that thou art John the Baptist. Mat. xvi. 14. I say unto you (said Jesus to his disciples), that Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed, likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist. Mat. xvii. 12, 13. The baptism of John whence was it? heaven or of men? (said Jesus to the chief priests and elders). And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say from heaven, he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him? But if we shall say of men, we fear the people, for all hold John as a prophet. Mat. xxi. 25, 26. John came unto you (said Jesus) in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not; but the publicans and harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward that ye might believe him. Mat. xxi. 32. John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. And there went out unto him all the land of Judea, &c. And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins, and he did eat locusts and wild honey. And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee preaching the Gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the Gospel. Mar. i. 4-15. When Herod heard thereof (of Jesus' miracles) he said, it is John whom I beheaded, he is risen from the dead. For Herod himself had sent forth, and laid hold upon John, and

bound him in prison; for John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's "wife" (" Herodias"). Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and the king sent an executioner (at the request of Herodias' daughter, who danced and pleased the king), and commanded his head to be brought, and the damsel gave it to her mother. And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse and laid it in a tomb. Mar. vi. 16–29. The angel of the Lord said unto him, Fear not Zacharias, for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. And thou shalt have joy and gladness, and many shall rejoice at his birth. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. Thou, child (said Zacharias), shall be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways. Lu. i. 13-17. 76. Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness, and he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ or not, John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water, but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose; he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire. But Herod the tetrarch being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison. Lu. iii. 2-20. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John; the same came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. John bare witness of "him" (the only begotten of the father), and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake. He that cometh after me is preferred before me; for he was before me. And this

2 of Judea, And saying, Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at

is the record of John: when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, who art thou? And he confessed and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ; I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness; make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. I baptize with water; but there standeth one among you whom ye know not. The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. Again, the next day after, John stood, and two of his disciples, and looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold, the Lamb of God. John i. 6-8. 15-36 John said (also), A man can receive nothing except it be given him from heaven: ye your selves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. He must increase, but I must decrease. John iii. 27-30. Beginning from the baptism of John (said Peter), unto that same day that he (Jesus) was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection. Ac. i. 22. Of this man's (David's) seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus: when John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John fulfilled his course he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he: but behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose. Ac. xiii. 23-25. And he (Paul) said unto them (the disciples at Ephesus), Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Ac. xix. 3-5. xi. 7.

Preaching.] The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. The voice said, Cry; and he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field. Is. xl. 3-6. And (John) preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

Mar. i. 7. And he (John) shall go before him (Jesus) in the spirit and power of Elias; to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. Lu. i. 17.

The wilderness.] And as "they" (“John's disciples") departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? &c. Mat. xi. 7. And now, behold (said Caleb to Joshua), the Lord hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the Lord spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness. Jos. xiv. 10. In the wilderness, Beth-arabah, Middin, and Secacah (of the cities of Judah). Jos. xv. 61. And when the messengers of John were departed, he (Jesus) began to speak unto the people concerning John; What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? &c. Lu. vii. 24.

2 Repent ye.] From that time (when Jesus leaving Nazareth came and dwelt in Capernaum) Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Mat. iv. 17. Then began he (Jesus) to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not. Mat. xi. 20. The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and behold, a greater than Jonas is here. Mat. xii. 41. A certain man had two sons (said Jesus, in the parable), and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work today in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not; but afterward he repented, and went. And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered, and said, I go, Sir; and went not. Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily, I say unto you, that the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before

you" ("the chief priests and elders"): for John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not; but the publicans and harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward that ye might believe him. Mat. xxi. 28-32. If they (the people, said Solomon in his prayer) shall bethink themselves in the land whither they were carried captives, and repent, and make supplication unto thee in the land of them that carried them captives, saying, We have sinned, and have done perversely; we have committed wickedness. Then hear thou their prayer, and their supplication in heaven thy dwelling-place, and maintain their cause. 1 Ki. viii. 47. 49. I abhor myself (said Job), and repent in dust and ashes. Job xlii. 6.

hand. For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, 3

Repent, and turn yourselves (O house of Israel) from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. Cast away from you all your transgressions whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart, and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves and live ye. Ez. xviii. 30, 31, 32. As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way, and live. Turn ye, turn ye, from your evil ways: for why will ye die, O house of Israel ? Ez. xxxiii. 11. John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. Mar. i. 4. And they (Jesus' disciples) went out and preached that men should repent. Mar. vi. 12. Except ye repent (said Jesus unto those who told him of the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices) ye shall all likewise perish. Lu. xiii. 3. 5. I say unto you (said Jesus), that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Likewise I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth. Lu. xv. 7. 10. And he (the rich man in the parable) said, Nay, father Abraham, but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. Lu. xvi. 30. Thus it is written; That repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his (Jesus') name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Lu. xxiv. 47. Then Peter said unto them (of Jerusalem), Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Ac. ii. 38. Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. Ac. iii. 19. When they (of the circumcision) heard these things (of the Gospel preached unto Phenice, &c.), they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life. Ac. xi. 18. The times of this ignorance (the Gentiles worshipping the unknown God) God winked at, but now commandeth all men every where to repent. Ac. xvii. 30. I (Paul) have shewed "you" ("the elders of Ephesus"), and have taught you publicly, and from house to house, testifying both to the Jews and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. Ac. xx. 21. I (Paul) shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet

for repentance. Ac. xxvi. 20. Godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation, not to be repented of; but the sorrow of the world worketh death. 2 Co. vii. 10. The servant of the Lord must not strive, but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth. 2 Ti. ii. 24, 25. Leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God. He. vi. 1. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2 Pe. iii. 9. Remember from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. I gave her (the woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, and has taught and seduced my servants to commit fornication, &c.) space to repent of her fornication, and she repented not. Re. ii. 5. 21. xxi. 29.

For the kingdom of heaven, &c.] Blessed are the poor in spirit, for their's is the kingdom of heaven; blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for their's is the kingdom of heaven. Mat. v. 3. 10. Whosoever shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Mat. v. 19, 20. Thy kingdom come. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Mat. vi. 10. 33. And as ye go (said Jesus to his twelve apostles), preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Mat. x. 7. From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. Verily, I say unto you, among them that are born of women there hath not arisen a greater than John the Baptist, notwithstanding, he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. Mat. xi. 12. 11. (Said Jesus to his disciples,) it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them (the multitude) it is not given. Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field. Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard-seed,
