Worship him.] See verse 10, 11. So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty; for he is thy Lord, and worship thou him. Ps. xlv. 11. All men should honour the Son even as they honour the Father; he that honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. John v. 23. "He" ("the blind man" whom Jesus restored to sight) said, Lord, I believe, and he worshipped him. John ix. 38. And Thomas (when his doubts were satisfied) answered and said unto him (Jesus), My Lord, and my God. John xx. 28. When he (God) bringeth in the first-begotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him. He. i. 6.

have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. of thy rising. Is. lx. 3. Thou (John) shalt Ps. ii. 6. Unto us a child is born, unto us a go before the face of the Lord, to prepare his son is given and the government shall be ways; to give knowledge of salvation unto his upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called people by the remission of their sins. Lu. i. 76-78. I, Jesus, have it with judgment and with justice from hence- sent mine angel to testify unto you these forth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of things in the churches; I am the root and hosts will perform this. Is. ix. 6, 7. Behold, the offspring of David, and the bright and a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes morning star. Re. xxii. 16. shall rule in judgment; and a man shall be as a hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. Is. xxxii. 1, 2. Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. Je. xxiii. 5. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion: shout O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee; he is just and having salvation; lowly and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass. Blessed be the King (said the multitude of the disciples) that cometh in the name of the Lord; peace in heaven and glory in the highest. Lu. xix. 38. Much people took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him (Jesus), and cried, Hosanna: blessed is the King of Israel, that cometh in the name of the Lord. John xii. 13. Pilate said unto him (Jesus), Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king; to this end was I born; and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. John xviii. 37. If thou let this man go (cried the Jews to Pilate) thou art not Cæsar's friend; whosoever maketh himself a king, speaketh against Cæsar. John xix. 12. See xxi. 5. and xxvi. 63.

His star in the east.] There shall come a Star out of Jacob (said Balaam), and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth. Nu. xxiv. 17. The Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness VOL. II.

3 He was troubled, &c.] And behold "they" ("the evil spirits") cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee Jesus, thou Son of God? Art thou come hither to torment us before the time? Mat. viii. 29. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not. Mat. xxiii. 37. Ahab said unto him (Elijah), Art thou he that troubleth Israel? I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and thou hast followed Baalim. 1 Ki. xviii. 17, 18. Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? For this man doeth many miracles; if we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him; and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and our nation. John xi. 47, 48. Sadducees being grieved, that "they" ("Peter and John") taught the people, and preached through Jesus, the resurrection from the dead, laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day. Ac. iv. 2. And when they (the company of the disciples) heard that (how Peter and John were let go from prison), they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord thou art God, which hast made heaven and earth, and the sea and all that in them is; who by the mouth of thy servant

4 and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and Scribes of the people together, he demanded of

David, hast said, Why do the heathen rage and the people imagine a vain thing? the kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. For of a truth, against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered toge ther. Ac. iv. 24-27. When the high priest and the captain of the temple, and the chief priests, heard these things (how the apostles had been released from prison by an angel), they doubted of them whereunto this would grow. Then came one and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people; then went the captain with the officers and brought them without violence. And the high priest asked them, saying, Did we not straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? And, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. Ac. v. 24-28. And (the masters of her out of whom came the spirit of divination at the word of Paul) brought "them" (" Paul and Silas") to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, and teach customs which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans. Ac. xvi. 20, 21. These (said the unbelieving Jews) that have turned the world upside down are come ‘hither” also (to "Thessalonica"); whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Cæsar, saying, that there is another king, one Jesus. Ac. xvii. 6, 7. 4 The chief priests.] When the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David, they were sore displeased. And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority? Mat. xxi. 15. 23. Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. Now the chief priests and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death. Mat. xxvi. 3, 4. 59. And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude, with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. Mat. xxvi. 47. When the morning was come (after Peter denied Christ), all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.

Mat. xxvii. 1. And there were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar; and thus were they divided. Among the sons of Eleazar there were sixteen chief men of the house of their fathers, and eight among the sons of Ithamar, according to the house of their fathers, &c. 1 Ch. xxiv. 4, &c. Moreover (besides the rebellion of Zedekiah), all the chief of the priests, and the people, transgressed very much after all the abominations of the heathen, and polluted the house of the Lord, which he had hallowed in Jerusalem. 2 Ch. xxxvi. 14. Then arose Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they should do according to his word (to reform the abuse of the strange marriages). Ezr. x. 5. These (above mentioned) were the chief of the priests and of their brethren in the days of Jeshua. Moreover the Levites (which came up with Zerubbabel), Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and Mattaniah, which was over the thanksgiving (i. e. psalms of thanksgiving); he and his brethren. Ne. xii. 7, 8. The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed. Ps. ii. 2. The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him (asking, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?), and the Pharisees, and chief priests, sent officers to take him. John vii. 32. Judas, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither (to Gethsemane) with lanterns and torches and weapons (seeking Jesus). John xviii. 3.

Scribes.] He (Jesus) taught them as one having authority, and not as the Scribes. Mat. vii. 29. Every scribe (said Jesus to his disciples) which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven, is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old. Mat. xiii. 52. Of the Levites there were scribes, and officers, and porters. And Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the Lord, given by Moses; and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan. 2 Ch. xxxiv. 13-15. Ezra went up from Babylon, and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses. Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra the priest, the scribe, even a scribe of the words of the commandments of the Lord, and of his statutes to Israel. Ezr. vii. 6. 11, 12. How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain. Je. viii. 8. And he (Jesus) began to teach them (his disciples) that the Son of man must

And the chief priests and the Scribes sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people, for they perceived that he had spoken the parable (of the wicked husbandmen) against them. And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words. And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly; neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly. Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Cæsar or no? but he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me? And in the audience of the people he said unto his disciples, Beware of the Scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers; the same shall receive greater damnation. Lu. xx. 19-23. 46, 47. And the chief priests and Scribes stood and vehemently accused "him" ("Jesus"). Lu. xxiii. 10. And the Scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery (tempting him). John viii. 3. And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers and elders and Scribes were gathered together at Jerusalem (offended with the teaching of Peter and John). Ac. iv. 5, 6. And they (certain of the synagogue of the libertines, &c.) stirred up the people and the elders and the Scribes, and came upon "him" (“ Stephen"), and caught him and brought him to the council, &c.

vi. 12. The Scribes that were of the Pharisees' part (opposed to the Sadducees) arose and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man (Paul); but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God. Ac. xxiii. 9.

He demanded of them, &c.] The priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth; for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts. Mal. ii. 7. Art thou a master of Israel (said Jesus to Nicodemus) and knowest not these things? John iii. 10. viii. 19. and xiii. 52.

5 In Bethlehem of Judea.] Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem. Ge. xxxv. 19. The outgoings thereof (of the border of the lot of Zebulun) are in the valley of Jiphthah-el; and Kattath, and Nahallal, and Shimron, and Idalah, and Bethlehem. Jos. xix. 14, 15. A certain man

(Elimelech) of Bethlehem-Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he and his wife (Naomi), and his two sons (Mahlon and Chilion). They two (Naomi, and Ruth, the wife of Chilion) went (after the death of Elimelech and his sons) until they came to Beth-lehem; and it came to pass, when they were come to Beth-lehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is not this Naomi ? Ru. i. 1. 19. And, behold, Boaz came from Beth-lehem, and said unto the reapers (in the field where Ruth was gleaning), The Lord be with you, &c. Ru. ii. 4. The Lord make the woman that is come into thine house (said the elders of the people to Boaz, who took Ruth to wife) like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel; and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem. Ru. iv. 11. Fill thine horn with oil (sqid the Lord to Samuel), and go, and I will send thee to Jesse, the Beth-lehemite; for I have provided me a king among his sons. 1 Sa. 16. 1.

6 Thou Beth-lehem.] See verse 1.

A Governor.] All power is given unto me in heaven and earth (said Jesus to his disciples). Mat. xxviii. 18. The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come: and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. Ge. xlix. 10. Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city. Nu. xxiv. 19. Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the chief ruler; but the birthright was Joseph's. 1 Ch. v. 2. Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision: then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. Ps. ii. 1. 4, 5, 6. Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given and the government shall be upon his shoulder: of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, and upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. Is. ix. 6, 7. He (God) hath put all things under his (Christ's) feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the Church. Ep. i. 22. And he is the head of the body, the Church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the pre-eminence. Col. i. 18. He shall rule them with a rod of iron. Re. ii. 27. The kingdoms of this world (said the

Rule my people Israel.] From following
the ewes great with young, he brought him
(David) to feed Jacob his people, and Israel
his inheritance: so he fed them according to
the integrity of his heart; and guided them by
the skilfulness of his hands. Ps. lxxviii. 71,
72. With whom took "he" ("the Lord")
counsel, and who instructed him in the path
of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and
shewed to him the way of understanding?
Is. xl. 14. I will set up shepherds over them
which shall feed them: and they shall fear no
more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be
lacking, saith the Lord. Behold, the days
come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto
David a righteous Branch, and a King shall
reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment
and justice in the earth: in his days Judah shall
be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely and
this is his name whereby he shall be called,
The Lord our Righteousness. Je. xxiii. 4, 5,
6. And I will set up one shepherd over them,
and he shall feed them, even my servant
David: he shall feed them, and he shall be their
shepherd and I the Lord will be their God,
and my servant David a prince among them:
and I will make with them a covenant of
peace. Ez. xxxiv. 23, 24, 25. And David
my servant shall be king over them, and they
shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk
in my judgments, and observe my statutes,
and do them: my servant David shall be their
prince. Moreover, I will make a covenant of
peace with them; it shall be an everlasting
covenant with them: and I will place them,
and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary
in the midst of them for evermore. Ez. xxxvii.
24-26.

7 When he had privily called, &c.] Then assembled together the chief priests, and the Scribes, and the elders of the people unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him: but they said, Not on the feast-day, lest there be an uproar among the people. Mat. xxvi. 3, 4, 5. Come on (said the king of Egypt, which knew not Joseph, to his people), let us deal wisely with "them" ("the children of Israel''); lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us. Ex. i. 10. And Saul said (to those who told him that his daughter Michal loved David), I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against

him. 1 Sa. xviii. 18. He (the wicked man)
lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he
lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch
the poor, when he draweth him into his net :
he croucheth, and humbleth himself, that the
poor may fall by his strong ones. Ps. x. 9, 10.
The words of his mouth were smoother than
butter, but war was in his heart; his words
were softer than oil, yet were they drawn
swords. Ps. lv. 21. Hide me from the secret
counsel of the wicked; who bend their bows to
shoot their arrows; that they may shoot in
secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot
at him, and fear not. They encouraged them-
selves in an evil matter: they commune of
laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see
them? they search out iniquities; they accom-
plish a diligent search. Ps. xiv. 2 -
They have taken crafty counsel against thy
people, and consulted against thy hidden ones:
They have said, Come, and let us cast them off
from being a nation; that the name of Israel
may be no more in remembrance. Ps. lxxxiii.
3, 4. Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son
of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel against
thee, saying, Let us go up against Judah, and
vex it, and let us make a breach therein for
us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the
son of Tabeal. Thus saith the Lord God, It
shall not stand, neither shall it came to pass.
Is. vii. 5, 6, 7. Thus saith the Lord God, It
shall also come to pass, that at the same time
shall things come into thy mind, and thou
shalt think an evil thought: and thou shalt
say, I will go up to the land of unwalled
villages; I will go to them that are at rest, and
dwell safely, all of them dwelling without
walls, and having neither bars nor gates. Ez.
xxxviii. 10, 11. And there appeared a great
wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the
sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon
her head a crown of twelve stars: and she,
being with child, cried, travailing in birth, and
pained to be delivered. And there appeared
another wonder in heaven; and, behold, a
great red dragon having seven heads, and ten
horns, and seven crowns upon his heads: and
his tail drew the third part of the stars of
heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and
the dragon stood before the woman, which
was ready to be delivered, for to devour her
child as soon as it was born. And she brought
forth a man child, who was to rule all nations
with a rod of iron: and her child was caught
up unto God, and to his throne. And the
serpent cast out of his mouth water, as a flood,
after the woman, that he might cause her to
be carried away of the flood. Re. xii. 1-5.

search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

8 Go and search diligently, &c.] Go, I pray you (said Saul to the Ziphites, who came to discover David to him), prepare yet, and know and see his place where his haunt is, and who hath seen him there: for it is told me that he dealeth very subtilely: see therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking places where he hideth himself; and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah. 1 Sa. xxiii. 22, 23. And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel: for the Lord had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the Lord might bring evil upon Absalom. 2 Sa. xvii. 14. Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of " them" (the "prophets of Baal" whom Elijah had slain). 1 Ki. xix. 2. "He" ("God") disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise: he taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong. Job v. 12, 13. The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect. The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations. Ps. xxxiii. 10, 11. There is no wisdom, nor understanding, nor counsel against the Lord. Pr. xxi. 30. Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not? La. iii. 37. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God for it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. And again, the Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain. 1 Co. iii. 19, 20.

That I may come and worship, &c.] that betrayed him (Jesus) gave them a sign, saying, Whosoever I shall kiss, the same is he hold him fast and forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master, and kissed him. Mat. xxvi. 48, 49. And it came to pass after forty years (i. e. from the time that David was anointed king), that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go in and pay my vow which I have vowed unto the Lord in Hebron and the king (David) said, Go in peace. But Absalom sent spies through all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom reigneth in Hebron. And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices: and the conspiracy was strong. 2 Sa. xv. 7-12. Jehu gathered

all the people together, and said unto them, Ahab served Baal a little; but Jehu shall serve him much: now therefore call unto me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests; let none be wanting: for I have a great sacrifice to do to Baal: whosoever shall be wanting, he shall not live. But Jehu did it in subtilty, to the intent that he might destroy the worshippers of Baal. 2 Ki. x. 18, 19. Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the Lord God of Israel; then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him, since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither, &c. Ezr. iv. 1, 2. They (the children of men) speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips, and with a double heart do they speak. The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things. Ps. xii. 2, 3. It was not an enemy that reproached me (said David); then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me, that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: but it was thou, a man, mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company. Ps. lv. 12, 13, 14. He that hateth, dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him: when he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart. Pr. xxvi. 24, 25. The second day after he (Ishmael) had slain Gedaliah, there came certain from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, even fourscore men, having their beards shaven, and their clothes rent, and having cut themselves, with offerings and incense in their hand, to bring them to the house of the Lord: and Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went forth from Mizpah to meet them, weeping all along as he went: and it came to pass, as he met them, he said unto them, Come to Gedaliah. And it was so, when they came into the midst of the city, that Ishmael slew them, and cast them into the midst of the pit, he and the men that were with him. Je. xli. 5, 6, 7. And they (the chief priests) watched him (Jesus), and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, so that they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor. And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly. Lu. xx. 20, 21.
