20 Therefore "by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight : for "by the law is the knowledge of sin.

21 But now the Wrighteousness of God without the law is manifested, * being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets ;

22 Even the righteousness of God which is * by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is a no difference:

23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness : k that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

27 Where is 'boasting then? It is excluded. By what law ? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.

28 Therefore we conclude that a man is mjustified by faith without the deeds of the law.

29 "Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also :

30 ° Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

31 P Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid : yea, we establish the law.

CHAP. IV. 1 Abraham's faith was imputed to him for righteousness, 10 before he

was circumcised : 13 by faith only he and his seed received the promise: 16 Abraham is the father of all that believe : 24 our faith also shall be imputed to us for righteousness.

WHAT shall we then say that * Abraham, our father as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. k See Acts, xiii. 28, 39.

Rom. ii. 17, 23. do. iv. 2. 1 Cor. i. 29, 31 : That no flesh should glory in his presence. He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. Eph. ii. 9: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

2 For if Abraham were "justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.

3 For what saith the Scripture ? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

4 Now to him that I worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.

5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth e the ungodly, his 'faith is counted for righteousness.

6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,

7 Saying, 6 Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham. 2 Cor. xi. 22: Are they Hebrews ? so am I. Are they Israelites ? so am I. Are they the seed of Abraham ? so am I.

Rom. iii. 20, 27, 28. c Gen. xv. 6: He believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. Gal. iii. 6 : Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. JAMES, ii. 23 : The Scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed to him for righteousness.

Rom. xi. 6: If by grace, then is it no more of works : otherwise grace is no more grace.

But if it be of works, then is it no more grace : otherwise work is no more work.

9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision alse? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.

10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision ? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised : that he might be the 'father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised ; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also :

12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.

13 For the promise, that he should be the "heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect :

"Gen. xvii. 10, 11 : This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin ; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.

Ver. 12, 16. Gal. iii. 7. "See on LUKE, xix. 9. *Gen. xvii. 4, &c: As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. GAL. iii. 29: And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs recording to the promise. See on Acts, iii. 25.

Gal. ii. 21 : I do not frustrate the grace of God : for if eousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
