UNE SORCIÈRE.

Le principal mérite des tableaux de Teniers consiste dans la vérité avec laquelle il sut rendre des scènes familières et quelquefois triviales des habitans de la Flandre, dans le siècle où il vivait. Celui-ci n'est point en rapport avec les habitudes de Teniers, tout est d'imagination, et le peintre, en cessant d'imiter la nature, n'en a pas moins fait un ouvrage d'un grand mérite. Le preuve en est que ce tableau a décoré le cabinet du célèbre peintre Josué Reynolds.

Les figures hideuses et fantastiques qui fourmillent dans ce tableau, la bouillante fureur de Cerbère, contrastent très-bien avec le calme parfait de la sorcière, qui entretient un commerce habituel dans l'enfer.

On connaît de ce précieux tableau, une belle mezzo-tinte, faite en 1786, par Richard Earlom.

A SORCERESS.

Teniers's chief excellence is the truth with which he represents the familiar, and even trivial scenes of Flemish life. Contrary to his usual practice, he has here attempted a work of pure imagination; and, though no longer guided by the exact imitation of nature, bas produced a picture of extraor dinary merit : in proof of this assertion it is sufficient to remark, that it adorned the cabinet of Sir Joshua Reynolds.

The hideous and fantastic shapes that crowd this piece, and the rage of Cerberus, are strikingly contrasted with the calmness of the Sorceress, who holds habitual commerce with hell.

This picture was finely engraved in mezzo-tinto, by Richard Earlom, in 1786.
