Notwithstanding the mythological title of this picture, it may be presumed, from the character of the head, that it is the portrait of a real person; whom Titian, agreeably to the practice of his day, has clothed with ideal attributes and represented as Venus, accompanied by Loves, and by attendants, who have possessed themselves of the bow and quiver of the fickle God.

This picture is in the Borghese palace, at Rome. It was designed by Strange, in 1764, and engraved by him, while in London, in 1769.

LA VIERGE ET L'ENFANT JÉSUS.

L'expression de la Vierge et la composition de ce groupe, rappellent aux yeux quelque chose du divin Raphaël, dont Jules Romain était l'élève; cependant on peut trouver la pose de l'Enfant Jésus un peu outrée. Les figures de ce tableau sont peintes de grandeur naturelle, la couleur en est vigoureuse. Il faisait partie du cabinet du comte de Frieses, et fut vendu à Vienne en 1825.
