PREFACE

In the new edition of the YEAR-BOOK will be found a series of Maps illustrative of the political changes which have taken place during the sixty years of Her Majesty's reign, 18371897. Several tables are also given containing statistics exhibiting progress in various directions during the same period. It has not been possible in all cases to carry these back to 1837, except at the risk of giving misleading statistics; in most cases, therefore, a later starting-place has been adopted. In the body of the YEAR-BOOK various important changes and additions have been made, partly the result of political events during the past year, and partly due to the acquisition of new material.

I have again to accord my warmest thanks to all those, in every part of the world, whose friendly co-operation enables my colleague and myself to make THE STATESMAN'S YEAR-BOOK what it is.
