RECENT INTELLIGENCE.

West-Africa Mission-Mr. John Warburton and Mrs. Warburton left Sierra Leone, in ill health, on the 3d of June, by the Nautilus," Capt. Tate; and landed at Liverpool on the 11th instant. They arrived in town on the 14th. The health of both improved upon the voyage.

Mediterranean Mission-By a Letter from the Rev. W. Krusé, dated Caïro, the 15th of June, we are informed that the Rev. J. R. T. Lieder had returned safely from Nubia on the 18th of May; and that he had departed again on the 2d of June, for Syria.

We have received intelligence from the Rev. J.A. Jetter, under date of July 7th, of the good health of all our friends at Smyrna, with the exception of himself. He still continued to suffer from fever, and was very weak.

South-India Mission-We have received Letters from Madeira, dated the 25th of July, mentioning the arrival there, on the previous day, of the Rev. B. Bailey and Mrs. Bailey (p. 145): they were in good health.

MEDITERRANEAN MISSION.

[VOL. V.

FROM copious communications received from Egypt, we are enabled to present our Readers with many important particulars concerning the religious and moral condition of that Station. However slow the improvement of any country in the Levant may be in its commencement, yet year after year seems to bespeak some sensible degree of progress in the work of God and while His arm is stretched out in judgment over many of the countries of the East, the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ appears to be favoured at the same time, both by the course of His Providence, and the workings of His Spirit.

The communications now given continue the account of this Mission from p. 145 of the present Volume.

Egypt.

The Rev. J. R. T. Lieder has been engaged, according to the part of the Missionary plans in Egypt sketched out for him, in two journeys; the one, to the Delta; the other, to Nubia. It was stated at p. 75 of this Volume, that it was his desire to have gone as far southward as Dongola; but the season at which he was at liberty to commence his second journey was too late for this. Such a distant expedition, he observes, would have required the traveller to set out on his voyage from Caïro not later than in the month of September. His second voyage did not commence till the month of February.

Voyage to Parts of the Delta. The principal opportunity sought by Mr. Lieder, in his visit to the Delta, appears to have been the annual festival of one of the Saints held in high repute by the Copts. This, therefore, occupies a chief part of his narrative.

Mr. Lieder gives the following sketch of his

Feelings at Departure-Missionary Outfit-Increased
Expensiveness in Egypt.

May 12, 1833-The wind has been continually against us; and so strong, that the boat cannot be drawn; and for these two days we have made scarcely any RECORD, Sept. 1834.]

way. Peculiar sensations agitated my mind and heart at the commencement of this journey. They were not occasioned by the thought of the many molestations stantly practised against the lonely traand trials of patience which are conveller by the boatmen, servants, and country people—rough men, in whom stupidity, rudeness, and a highly bad will are united ;-but by the anxiety of the heart to save men, to sow a seed that shall not be lost, but bring forth fruit to all eternity; and, on the other hand, by the view of those manifold difficulties which encompass the messenger of Christ on every side.

I was provided with a rich treasure of Holy Scriptures in various languages, besides Publications of the Society's Press in Malta. The following is the detail. Copies of Holy Scriptures.

The navigation on the Nile becomes every year more expensive. For such a vessel, with six men, as I now pay 550 piastres a month for, I had formerly to pay only 350 piastres. The cause is, partly the general rise of all necessaries, and partly the scarcity of labouring hands, occasioned by the recruiting of the Viceroy's army.

May 14, 1833-Last night I had a violent catarrhal fever, but feel better to-day. The difference between the temperature of Caïro and that on the Nile in Lower Egypt is considerable, and has often, in the beginning, an injurious effect on the health, especially if one cannot screen himself in the boat against the strong wind. In Caïro, the thermometer stood in the shade at 80° Fahrenheit: but here, on the Nile, it was 90° at noon, and fell to 62o in the night. The north wind blows still very powerfully, so that we move on very slowly.

Visit to the Convent of Sette Gemiana-Superstitions there-Missionary Conversations and Labours.

Al

I shall first proceed (Mr. Lieder writes) without delay to Sette Gemiana, in order to be present at the approaching festival of this saint, which is celebrated in a Coptic Convent erected to her honour, and situated on the Delta, N.W. from Mansura. To this spot, numberless Christians, not only Copts, but of all denominations, repair from all parts of the country; and even Mahomedans, who regard this saint as their own. most every one brings a gift for the saint, or rather for the convent; and takes back, in exchange, some trifle of little value, as rings, bracelets, &c.. which cost each, at most, 20 paras: they make presents of these at home; and superstition so greatly raises their value, that even the most respectable women wear them with their most valuable jewels. The Christians from Saïd (Upper Egypt), in particular, take earth with them for their friends;

of which they make precious presents, even to Mahomedans, who put it on their heads--to become holy! What Tante is to the worshippers of Islam in Egypt and the adjacent countries -on account of Said Achmet el Bedawi, called the Small Prophet, who is buried there, and whose tomb every one visits who cannot go to Mecca-such is Sette Gemiana to the Copts, frequented by all who cannot journey to Jerusalem. The festival lasts properly only one day, and takes place on the 12th Bishant of the Coptic month, with us the 19th of May; but the greater part of the attendants repair to the spot six or eight days before.

May 15-This morning we arrived at Badra, on the western bank, a few hours to the north of Mansura, and the nearest village to Sette Gemiana. I loaded a camel with my tent, bookcases, &c., and packed the rest of my luggage on asses. We started at ten o'clock; and after riding for three-quarters of an hour, we came to a well-built village, One hour and a quarter called Busât. further, and half an hour below Sendile, another village, we crossed the broad and always navigable canal Gamâsara. After another quarter of an hour, we passed near a village, Cafe Tijab; and then reached the convent in two hours and three-quarters. The whole way occupied five hours. The large tract of land, in the midst of which the convent stands, cannot properly be called a desert it is good land, every year watered by the overflow of the Nile; and although much saltpetre is contained in it, yet the attempt made here and there to cultivate it succeeds very well. The convent appears in sight at an hour's distance. It is an irregular square, covered with a number of domes of various sizes; looks pretty well at a distance; but, when near, all the fancied beauty vanishes, and nothing can be seen but a filthy, clumsy, and extremely irregular pile. Most striking, however, is the sight of so many tents of all sizes and colours: they were about 100, all pitched on the main side of the convent; and to these I also added mine.

May 16-At an early hour this morning, I went out in quest of some acquaintances. In front of the door of the convent there are many dealers in fruits and other food, mostly Mahomedans, exposing their very bad wares on the floor or in miserable stalls: the first yard of
