With all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.-1 Cor. i. 2.

Comforter, that he may abide with Christ came, who is over all, God, you for ever, even the Spirit of truth, blessed for ever, Amen.Rom. &c. I will come to you, &c. He ix. 5. who loveth me, &c. I will love him, and manifest myself to him, &c. And my Father will love him; and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him, &c. The Comforter, the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you. —John xiv. 7—11. 13, 14. 16—18. 21. 23. 26.

When the Spirit of truth is come, &c. he will shew you things to come: He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine, and shew it unto you. All things which the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you, &c. Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you, &c. I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world; again I leave the world, and go to the Father, &c.-John xvi. 13—15. 23. 27, 28. 30.

Now, O Father, glorify thou me, &c. with the glory which I had with thee before the world was! &c. And all mine are thine, and thine are mine, and I am glorified in them, &c. that they all may be one, as thou Father art in me, and I in thee.-John xvii. 5.

Why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost? &c. Thou hast not lied unto men but unto God, &c. How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord?-Acts v. 3, 4. 9.

Of whom, as concerning the flesh,

The Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For, what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man but the Spirit of God.-1 Cor. ii. 10, 11.

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?-1 Cor. iii. 16.

He who is joined unto the Lord, is one spirit, &c. Know you not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, who is in you, which ye have of God? &c.-1 Cor. vi. 17. 19. 2 Cor. vi. 16.

To us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things; and one Lord Jesus.-1 Cor. viii. 6.

Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed, &c.-1 Cor. x. 9.

Now the Lord is that Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty, &c. Even as by the Spirit of the Lord (or of the Lord the Spirit).-2 Cor. iii. 17, 18.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. 2 Cor. xiii. 14.

God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, &c.—Gal: iv. 6.

Through him, we both have an access by one Spirit unto the Father, &c. in whom you also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.-Ephes. ii. 18. 22.

All things were created by him and for him; and he is before all things, and by him all things consist.-Col. i. 16, 17. Heb. i. 2, 3.

The mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; in whom (or wherein) are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, &c. for in

him dwelleth all the fulness of the godhead bodily.-Col. ii. 2, 3. 9.

Now God himself, and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way.-1 Thess. iii. 11.

God our Saviour, and the. Lord Jesus Christ our hope: grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, &c. I thank Jesus Christ our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me, &c.-1 Tim. i. 1, 2. 12. Rom. i. 7. 1 Tim. ii. 3. 2 John 3. Great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, &c. received up into glory.-1 Tim. iii. 16..

According to the commandment of God our Saviour, &c. grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour. -Titus i. 3, 4.

Looking for, &c. the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus.-Titus ii. 13. iii. 4.

Christ, who through the eternal Spirit, offered himself. Heb. ix. 14. Let all the angels of God worship him. Unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, &c.-Heb. i. 6. 8.

The prophets, &c. searching what, &c. the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify.-1 Pet. i. 10, 11. God, and our Saviour, Jesus Christ. -2 Peter i. 1.

Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us.-1 John iii. 16.

There are three who bear record in heaven; the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost; and these three are one, &c. His Son Jesus Christ; this is the true God, &c.1 John v. 7. 20.

FIRST, Of his first State. AND God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him, male and female created he them. And God blessed them; and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea, &c.-Gen. i. 26— 29. Ps. viii. 5—7.

Adam gave names to all the creatures which were brought to him.Gen. ii. 19, 20.

SECONDLY, Of his Fall.

THE manner and occasion of man's fall, at large. Gen. iii. 2 Cor. xi. 3.

God made man upright: but they have sought out many inventions.— Eccles. vii. 29.

By one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin: and so death passed upon all men, for that (or in whom) all have sinned, &c. If through the offence of one man many be dead, &c. The judgment was by one to condemnation, &c. For if, by one man's offence (or one offence) death reigned by one man, &c. by one man's dis

obedience many were made sinners. -Rom. v. 12. 15-19.

I fear, lest as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted, &c.

2 Cor. xi. 3.

THIRDLY, Of Man's State by Nature, since Sin entered.

SECT. 1. Corrupt, Unclean, and desperately Wicked.

ADAM, ready to excuse his sin, laid it upon Eve; and Eve laid it upon the serpent.-Gen. iii. 12, 13.

Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell, because God had not respect unto his offering, as unto Abel's; and he rose up against his brother, and slew him. Gen. iv. 5.8.

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and every imagination of the thoughts of his heart (or the whole imagination, purposes, and desires) was only evil continually, &c. The earth also was corrupt before God: and the earth was filled with violence, &c. for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth, &c.-Gen. vi. 5. 11, 12.

. The imaginations of man's heart are evil from his youth.-Gen. viii. 21. xi. 4.

The wickedness of Sodom, at the time when God came to destroy it.Gen. xix.

Esau sold his birthright for a mess of pottage.-Gen. xxv. 30-33.

Esau hated his brother, because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him and Esau said in his heart, &c. then will I slay my brother Jacob.-Gen. xxvii. 41.

Joseph's brethren hated him, could not speak peaceably to him, and envied him; they conspired against him to slay him, and covered it with a lie. —Gen. xxxvii. 4. 11. 18-20. 23, 24.

And Pharaoh said, Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the Lord, neither will I let Israel go.-Exod. v. 2. After all the wonders Moses wrought,

and the judgments against Egypt, his heart was still hardened against God, and would not yield; though the magicians acknowledged the finger of God.-Exod. vii..viii. íx. x.

Ahab hardened.—1 Kings xxii. Saul excuseth his disobedience, upon pretence that the people pre served the cattle for sacrifice.-1 Sam. xv. 15. 19. 21.

Saul's cruelty, in causing Abimelech and above fourscore priests to be slain without cause.-1 Sam. xxii. 14-18.

Absalom had a tent spread upon the top of the house, and went in unto his father's concubines, in the sight of all Israel.-2 Sam. xvi. 22.

Ahab had sold himself to work evil in the sight of the Lord, &c. None like unto Ahab, who did set himself to work wickedness in the sight of the Lord.-1 Kings xxi. 20. 26.

Ps. cxli. 4. 9. 1 Kings xxii. Ahaziah, being sick, sent to an idol, to inquire; and after sent a captain with his fifty to take the prophet, whom God destroyed with fire; yet he sent again and again.—2 Kings i.

2.9-13.

The King of Israel said, This evil is of the Lord: what should I wait for the Lord any longer?-2 Kings vi. 33.

Hazael, when the prophet had told him how wicked he should be, said, Is thy servant a dog? &c.-2 Kings viii. 11-13.

Rabshakeh said, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest, &c. Let not Hezekiah deceive you, &c. neither make your trust in the Lord, &c. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land? &c. Who, &c, hath delivered, &c. that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand? &c.-2 Kings. xviii. 19. 29, 30. 32, 33. 35. Isa. xxxvi. xxxvii.

The words of Sennacherib, who hath sent him to reproach the living God, &c. Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed, and against whom

Israel laughed to scorn and mocked the messengers of Hezekiah, who exhorted them to repent.-2 Chron. xxx. 6, 7. 10, &c.

The chief of the priests and the people transgressed very much after all the abominations of the heathens, &c. And the Lord, &c. sent to them by his messengers, &c. but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose, &c. till there was no remedy.-2 Chron. xxxvi. 14-16.

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean thing? Not one.-Job xiv. 4. Ezek. xvi. 3, &c.

What is man, that he should be clean? or he who is born of a woman, .that he should be righteous? &c. Yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight: how much more abominable and filthy is man, who drinketh ini quity like water?-Job xv. 14-16.

XXV. 4.

The wicked say, &c. Depart from us, for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what can he do?-Job xxi. 7. 14, 15. xxii. 17. xxxiv. 9.

The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his Anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.-Ps. ii. 2, 3. Matt. ii. 16. The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek God; God is not in all his thoughts, &c. His mouth is full of cursing, and deceit, and fraud, &c. He hath said

in his heart, God hath forgotten; he hideth his face, he will never see, &c. Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? &c.-Ps. x. 4. 7. 11. 13. 1. 17, &c.

With our tongue will we prevail? our lips are our own: who is Lord over us?-Ps. xii. 4.

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt; they have done abominable works: there is none who doeth good, &c. They are all gone aside; they are all together become filthy (or stinking): there is none who doth good, no, not one.-Ps. xiv. 1—3. liii. 1—3. Eccles. ix. 3.

He deviseth mischief upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good.-Ps. xxxvi. 4. Prov. iv. 16.

I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.-Ps. li. 5.

The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies, &c.— Ps. lviii. 3-5.

Pride compasseth them about as a chain: violence covereth them as a garment, &c. They are corrupt and speak wickedly, &c. They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth, &c. They say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the Most High?

Ps. lxxiii. 6. 8, 9. 11. xciv. 4. 7. Job xxiv. 14, 15.

The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, &c. For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.Ps. lxxviii. 31, 32. 56–58.

They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, &e. they have consulted together with one consent (or heart): they are confederate against thee.-Ps. lxxxiii. 3. 5.

They frame mischief by a law: they gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.-Ps. cxiv. 20, 21.

.

For they sleep not except they have done mischief; and their sleep is

taken away unless they cause some to fall.-Prov. iv. 16.

The tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.-Prov. xii. 10.

Fools make a mock at sin.-Prov. xiv. 9.

Not a just man upon the earth, who doth good, and sinneth not. Eccles. vii. 20. Prov. xx. 9.

Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.-Eccles. viii. 11. Ps. lv. 19.

Woe unto them who draw iniquity, &c. who say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it, &c.-Isa. v. 18-20.

The king of Assyria, lifted up in pride, said, Shall not I do to Jerusalem as to Samaria? &c. By the strength of my hand have I done it; and by my wisdom, for I am prudent. -Isa. x. 10, 11. 13.

Ye have said, We have made a covenant with death and with hell, &c. The scourge shall not come unto us, &c.-Isa. xxviii. 15.

Let favour be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness, &c. In the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the Majesty of the Lord, &c. When thy hand is lifted up, they will not see, &c.-Isa. xxvi. 10, 11. They make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him who reproveth in the gate, &c.-Isa. xxix. 21.

Thou hast trusted in thy wickedness; thou hast said, None seeth me, &c. and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me.-Isa. xlvii. 10.

All we, like sheep, have gone astray: we have turned every one to his own way.-Isa. liii. 6.

The wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest; whose waters cast up mire and dirt.-Isa. lvii. 20.

Thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go. Jer. ii. 25, xxi. 21.

Thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved: thou hast consumed them, they have refused to receive correction; they have made their faces harder than a rock: they have refused to return.-Jer. v. 3.

Were they ashamed? &c. They were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore, &c. Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the way, and see, and ask for the old paths; where is the good way; and walk therein, &c. But they said, We will not walk therein. Jer. vi. 15, 16.

They speak not aright; no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? Every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle.-Jer. viii. 6.

The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron; with a point of a diamond it is graven upon the table of their heart, &c. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked, &c.-Jer. xvii. 1. 9.

Thus saith the Lord, Return ye, &c. And they said, There is no hope; but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imaginations of his evil heart, &c. Let us devise devices against Jeremiah, &c. and let us not give heed to any of his words.-Jer. xviii. 11,12. 18.

The king cut and burned the roll, wherein was written Jeremy's prophecy; and would have taken the prophet himself.-Jer. xxxvi. 21. 23, 24. 26.

The people told Jeremiah, We will not hearken unto thee: but we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, &c.-Jer. xliv. 15-17.

They are stiff-hearted, &c. they are rebellious, &c. they are impudent.Ezek. ii. 4. 7. iii. 7.

Hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery? For they say, The Lord seeth not us; the Lord hath forsaken the earth.-Ezek. viii. 12.
