Mr. Brooks' reputation as a preacher stands very high among his own countrymen, and several of his previous volumes which have found their way across the Atlantic, such as Lectures on Preaching, &c., have attracted attention here. It may be hoped, therefore, that this new volume will be welcome to English readers. The objects of the present work are to give a brief and popular sketch of the data on which the doctrine of Evolution is founded, and to shew that instead of being atheistic it is the very reverse, and is no more opposed to the Biblical account of the Creation than those geological doctrines regarding the structure and formation of the earth's crust which were once regarded as heretical and dangerous, but are now to be found in every

class-book, and are taught in every school. The plan adopted has been to give a brief account, first, of the living things both animal and vegetable which now exist on this earth, and of their relation to one another; and, secondly, of the forms of life which existed in the early ages of the world's history, and their relationships to one another, as well as to those of the present day. After this follows a discussion of the question, how these various forms of life, past and present, came into existence, whether by sudden creation or gradual evolution.

This work having been regarded with favour by competent theologians and thinkers, the author has decided to set aside his nom de plume and appear in his true character. The Guardian says: "The book has great moral and spiritual earnestness. It is as reverent in tone as refined in style; it abounds in traces of deep and religious thoughtfulness, and in passages of suggestive beauty.' And the Spectator thus analyses the work: "Well worth studying. Full of thoughtful and happy suggestions. We have not space to notice the many points of interest in A New Analogy,-points which, whether we feel agreement or disagreement with them, at least set us thinking. . . . His book should be read and studied, for it is the work of a reverent, meditative, and subtle mind, which has realised the truth so finely expressed in the author's own words about Nature and Revelation."
