This morning an account has been received from Major Hardy, that yesterday a body of between three and four thoufand had collected near Dunlavin, when they were entirely defeated, with the lofs of three hundred men, by Lieutenant Gardner, at the head of a detachment of the Antrim militia, and Capt. Hardy's and Captain Hume's yeomanry.

The troops and yeomanry behaved with the utmoft gallantry in both actions. Lieutenant-General Craig left Dublin yefterday, in the hopes of meeting the body of the rebels which had collected near Dunboyne, and parties were sent in different directions to furround them. They, however, fled in the night,_on hearing the approach of the troops. The General came up, however, with a party, confifting of about five hundred, fome of whom were put to the fword.

By accounts from the North, it appears that the province of Uifter is quiet. I have the honour to be, with the greateft refpect, my Lord, your Grace's most faithful and humble servant,

CAMDEN.

His Grace the Duke of Portland. P. S. The city of Dublin has been per fectly tranquil, owing to the precautions which have been taken; and it is impoffible to defcribe, in terms fufficiently ftrong, the indefatigable zeal, patience, and fpirit of the yeomanry corps. Too much praise cannot be given to his Majefty's regular and militia forces; and the latter have had opportunities of evincing their fteadiness, difcipline, and bravery, which muft give the highest fatisfaction to his Majefty, and infpire the beft grounded confidence in their exertions, fhould they have a more formidable enemy to contend with,

In confequence of an informa ion, received this morning, that a large body of rebels were marching to attack the town, Lieut. Gardner and Captain Hardy, with the men under their command, went out to meet them. Having reconnoitred their force, which amounted to between three and four thousand, they took their poft on the hill under the church, and when the rebels came tolerably near, the offi cers and men made a feint, and retreated into the barracks, where they prepared to repel them, in cafe of an attack. On the rebels feeing the military retreat, they came on with a great fhout, imagining the day to be their own. In a few minutes Captain Humne came up, with about thirty of his yeomanry troop, and inftantly charged them, on which the rebels retreated, and a general pursuit took place; and I have the fatisfaction to inform you, that above three hundred of

the mifcreants lie dead on the field of

battle.

To fay that the Antrim regiment behaved well is not any thing new to you; but the yeomen, under Captain Hume's command, behaved astonishingly.

Whitehall, May 30, Ten P. M.

A difpatch, of which the following is a copy, has been received this evening from bis Excellency the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, by his Grace the Duke of Portland, his Majefty's Principal Secretary of State for the Home Department.

MY LORD,

Dublin Cafle, May 27;

I have the fatisfaction to inform your Grace, that the body of rebels who for fome days had been in confiderable force to the northward of Dublin, were yesterday defeated, with very great lofs on their part, by a party of the Reay fenci bles, and the neighbouring yeomanry corps, on the hill of Taragh.

Five companies of the Reay fencibles, under the command of Captain Scobie, had halted yesterday at Dunfhaughlin, on their march to Dublin; and hearing that the rebels were in great force, and had taken a ftation on Taragh Hill, Captain Scobie detatched three of the companies, under the command of Captain M'Lean, with one field piece, to the fpot; who, being accompanied by Lord Fingal and his troop of yeomanry, Captain Pres ton's and the Lower Kells yeomanry

cavalry,

cavalry, and Captain Molloy's company
of yeomanry infantry, attacked the re
bels, who, after fome refiitance, fled in
all directions.

Three hundred and fifty were found
dead in the field this morning, among
whom was their Commanding Offi er,
in his uniform; many more were kil ed
and wounded. Some horfes were taken,
and great quantities of arms. The lots,
on the part of the King's troops, was 9
rank and file killed, and 16 wounded.

The town is perfectly quiet, and the
only part of the country from whence
any attack is threatened, is from Wick-
Jow. I fhall have the honour to remain,
with perfect truth,

Your Grace's moft obedient fervant,

His Grace the Duke of Portland.
