and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou dost not regard the person of men. Tell us therefore what thou thinkest: Is it lawful to give tribute to Cesar, or not? But Jesus knowing their wickedness said: Why do ye tempt me, ye hypocrites? Shew me the tribute-coin. And they shewed him a penny. And Jesus said to them: Whose image and inscription is this? XXIII. SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST. N. B. If there be but three and twenty Sundays after Pentecost, the Mass of the twenty-fourth Sunday is said to-day: and this for the twenty-third, is said on the foregoing Saturday, if not kindred by some double or semidouble; in that case, it is said on some other vacant day of the preceding week.

EPISTLE. Phil. iii. J 7. 4: i. 3.

BRETHREN: Be followers of me, and observe those who' walk according to the model you have in us. For many walk, whom I have told you often (and now tell you weeping)- are enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction; whose God is their belly; and whose glory is their shame; who mind earthly things. But our conversation is in heaven: from whence also we look for the Saviour, our Lord Jesus Christ, who will reform this our lowly body, making it like his glorious body, by that power, wherewith he is also able to subject all things to himself. Chap. iv. Wherefore my most beloved and dear brethren, my joy and my crown: stand thus fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved. I beg of Evodia, and I beseech Syntiche to be of one mind in the Lord. And Jesus arose, and followed him with his disciples. And behold a woman, who had been troubled with a bloody flux twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment. For she said within herself: If

I shall but touch the hem of his garment, I shall be healed. But Jesus turning about, and seeing her, said: Be of good heart, daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. And when Jesus was come into the house of the ruler, and saw the minstrels and multitude making a rout, he said: Be gone, for the young woman is not dead but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. And when the multitude was put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand. And the young woman arose. And the fame thereof went abroad into all that country. Credo.

COMM. Mark xi. Ve- Amen, dicovobis, quicrily, I say to you, whatever quid orantes petitis, credite you ask in prayer, believe quia accipietis, et fiet vobis. that you shall receive it, and it shall be granted you.

VESPERS, N. B. If this be the last Sunday after Pentecost, instead of the following Anthem, is said that of the twenty-fourth Sunday.

Prayer. Collect at Mass, p. 238. N. B, There cannot be fewer than twenty-three Sundays between Pentecost and Advent; nor more than twenty-eight. The Office of the twenty-fourth is always said on that Sunday, which immediately precedes Advent. If there are any Sundays between the twenty-third and the last; the Introit, Gradual, Offertory and Communion, are taken out of the twenty-third Sunday. The rest as in the Sundays after the Epiphany. If there be only one Sunday between the twenty-third, and the last; office is of the sixth Sunday after the Epiphany. If there be two; it is of the fifth and sixth. If there be three; it is of the fourth, fifth, and sixth. If there be four; it is of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth.

XXIV. Or last SUNDAY after PENTECOST. MASS. All as on the twenty-third Sunday, except: COLLECT. Excita. Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the hearts of the faithful; that becoming more zealous in the performance of good works, they may receive from thy goodness more effectual remedies for their disorders. Thro'.

EPISTLE. Colos. i. 9. 14.

BRETHREN: We cease not to pray for you, and to beg that you may be filled with the knowledge of the will of God, in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of God, pleasing him in all things; being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to the power of his glory, in all patience and long suffering, with joy, giving thanks to God the Father, who hath made us worthy to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light: and delivered us from the power of darkness, and translated us to the kingdom of his beloved Son; in whom we have redemption, through his blood, even the remission of sins.

AT that time ; Jesus said to his Disciples: When you shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place; (he that readeth let him understand) then let them that are in Judea, flee to the mountains: and let him, who is on the house-top, not come down to take any thing out of his house? and let him, who is in the field, not go back to take his coat. And wo to those, that are with child, and give suck in those days. But pray ye your flight may not be in the winter, nor on the Sabbath. For the tribulation shall then be great, such as hath not been from the beginning of the world till now, nor ever shall be. And unless those days had been shortened, no flesh would be saved; but out of regard to the elect, those days shall be shortened. Then if any one shall say to you; behold, here is the Christ, or there he is; believe him not. For false Christs and false prophets shall arise, and shew great signs and wonders, that even the elect (were it possible) would be seduced into error. Behold, I have foretold you of it. If therefore they shall say to you; Behold, he is in the desert; go ye not forth ; behold he is in the closets; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and appeareth even to the west; so also shall be the coming of the Son of man. Wherever a carcass is, there will the eagles be gathered also. And presently after the tribulation of those days, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven shall be moved: and then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven; and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn ; and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with great power and majesty. And he shall send his Angels with a trumpet and a loud voice; and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the farthest parts of the heavens even to the utmost bounds of them. Now learn a parable from the fig-tree; when its branches are tender, and the leaves shoot forth, you know the summer is near; so also, when you shall see all these things come to pass, know 'tis nigh, even at your doors. Verily, I say to you; this generation shall not pass away, till all these things be done. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. Credo.
