The summer warmth hath left the sky,
The summer songs have died away,
And, withered, in the footpaths lie
The fallen leaves, but yesterday,

Farmer's Calendar.

THIS is called the orchard month, but in some parts of New

England it is best to pick apples, as well as all fall and winter fruit, by the last of September, as they will keep better if not allowed to become over-ripe upon the trees. Great care should be taken in picking fruit not to bruise it, and it should be packed in a cool, dry cellar of even temperature. Always strive to grow as good a quality of fruit as the trees are capable of producing, as well as the best quality of vegetables, for the best is always sure

of a market.

In fact, whatever you do, let it be well done. It is much better

to have a small farm well culti

vated than to have a large one

run over carelessly.

Fruit-trees may be set this month, but it is better to set peach-trees in the spring. Place them where they will not grow frost. rapidly, and will not feel too died, 1895, quickly the warm days in late autumn, which will cause the A buds to start, thus ruining the crop for next year. Native seedling peach-trees are to be preferred, as they are much hardier. These can be budded from good native trees; but from whatever stock they may be budded, they will be hardier than roots coming from a more southern climate. Raise fruit of all kinds for family use. It is pleasant to eat fruit 31 C 20th S. af. T. All-Hallows Eve. from your own farm.
