The bluebird chants, from the elm's long branches,
A hymn to welcome the budding year.

The south wind wanders from field to forest,
And softly whispers, "The Spring is here."

Farmer's Calendar.

Do not neglect to rid your trees of caterpillars as soon as they begin to weave their nests. Take them early in the morning-beand equipped with a long pole fore they go out to breakfast with a swab on the end dipped in kerosene oil, draw this through the nest and clean them out. Do not burn them, as this would be likely to injure the trees. Look out, by the tenth of the month, for the currant worm, which appears first, when very small, in the middle of the bush. Shake on powdered hellebore. Early in the month the parsnips, carrots, and beets should be planted.

a

Ground bone and nitrate of soda instead of manure will greatly improve the appearance of lawn. Root up the weeds while they are small, and save much hard labor, and insure rapid growth to the plants. Plant cucumbers and melons towards the

last of the month. If the crop is expected to grow rapidly, the ground should be stirred whether there are weeds to kill or not.

See that the fences are well re

paired before the cattle are sent to pasture. He who would have a good garden must visit it daily, that he may discover and destroy the insect enemies before they do

any essential injury. Chickens may run in the garden until they are four weeks old, providing the hen does not run with them; they will do but little injury, and much good.

'Tis sweet in the green spring,

To gaze upon the wakening fields around;
Birds in the thicket sing,

Winds whisper, waters prattle from the ground;
A thousand odors rise,

Breathed up from blossoms of a thousand dyes.

Do not be discouraged in trying to destroy the weeds; it is essential that the young plants get a good start. Keep weeds out of the mowing as much as possible, so the seeds will not get into the manure, and thus into the garden. Corn, peas, and beans should be planted in the garden at several different times, so as to keep the table supplied with fresh and tender vegetables during the season. Hungarian grass should be sown about the middle of the month, and if a good crop is expected the land should be well fertilized. The battle with the worms and bugs should be kept up through the entire month; early in the morning the gray cut-worm can be found near the which he cut off the night before. surface, not far from the plant

The striped bug can be kept from the cucumber and squash vines with air-slacked lime, which is better than hellebore, if a portion of it be placed around the stalks.

The second-crop currant worm will now appear, and should be treated with another dose of hellebore. The black squash-bug should be trapped under old shingles placed around the hills, where they can easily be destroyed. The rose bug will put in an appearance the last of the month, and is one of the most difficult enemies to destroy. If the most certain way to destroy not numerous, hand picking is

them.
