Farmer's Calendar.

IF the farmer neglects to keep everything sweet and clean in and around the house and farm buildings during the hot weather, he may expect that some of the family will be out of health, and

perhaps have diphtheria or scarlet fever by breathing bad air. The farmer is so busy during the hottest part of the year that he is more likely to neglect to take proper care of the waste of the house than those who follow other occupations; but as health is more important than money, no one should ever be so busy as in and around the dwelling-house, to neglect to remove everything, that is likely to breed disease. When the grass in the pastures becomes short, feed the milch cows at the barn every night, and thus keep up the flow of milk. The last of the month, if the ground is not too dry, is a good time to seed down land to grass; but if the season be dry, it is best to delay this work until the September rains begin. Mow the weeds around the planted fields before they ripen any seeds, and also keep them out of the garden, thus saving work for the next season. If a good crop of pears is expected they should be thinned so as to be at least six inches apart. Keep the weeds out of the strawberry bed, or the crop will be small next year.

crops, and mow those around the farm buildings before the

seed ripens. In fact, it pays to destroy them on all parts of the farm before they begin to ripen their seed. This may increase the labor for two or three years, but if the work be faithfully done, it will put the farm in a condition to produce hoed crops with much less labor, Potatoes should be dug this month, and be housed in a cool cellar. Those

intended for planting should be

carefully selected when harvested, and kept where they will not get chilled, and yet where it is so cool that they will not sprout much before planting time. It is difficult, if not impossible, to grow a large crop of potatoes from poorly kept tubers. The cranberry bog should be watched, and the water kept up within a few inches of the roots of the vines, then, when there is an in

dication of a frost, it can be raised

so as nearly to cover the fruit; but it is not safe to keep the fruit liable to injure the keeping qualiunder water many hours; it is ty of the fruit, especially if the

water be warm.

Take your wife and children to the agricultural fair; it will do them good.
