Farmer's Calendar.

"TAKE time by the forelock and not wait and have to run behind," is an old and true saying. There is much work which

the farmer can do this month that will save him from having to rush business next month. The fences can be mended up or reset, as may be thought best; the firewood housed and the dooryard cleared up; private land and the fields that are to be roads put in order; the mowing ploughed cleared of stones and rocks. As soon as the ground is dry enough to work well, ploughing for spring rye, wheat, and oats should commence; and the last of the month, potatoes should be planted. As a rule, potatoes in Southern and Middle New England do best when planted as soon as the soil gets dry and warm enough to work well. If a good crop is expected, the land must not only be well manured, but the manure must be thoroughly mixed with the soil; no time is better or more profitably spent by the farmer than that in pulverizing the soil before the seed is planted. The orchard should be looked after and the borers removed from the peach and apple trees; when this is done, make a mound of coarse sand or fine gravel around each

tree, and let it remain undisturbed until the middle of Sepmiller from laying any eggs at tember; this will prevent the

the roots of the tree.

Beyond the tumbling wall, there broke

"Twas the first robin spoke.

STEDMAN.

Farmer's Calendar.

THERE are many things the boys can do this month to help the farmer, even though they attend school; but only light work should be given them. To make a boy work hard before school and after, for any great

length of time, endangers his health, and is very sure to make him hate the farm. The farmer

who succeeds the best is he who

never lets his business rush him, but is always ready to rush business when necessary; he exercises his judgment as to the best time to plant each crop, and when the time comes he does not delay, but plants. A few days' delay in planting corn or potatoes will sometimes make a difference in the harvest of one third. Do not try to plant the whole farm, but plant only such part as can be well manured and well cared for; if two hundred bushels of corn are to be grown, it is better to do it on three acres than six. Every farmer who keeps milch cows should try to raise his own corn. The fodder when properly cured is worth as much per ton as English hay, so say some of the experiment stations. Milch cows should not be turned out to pasture until the grass gets well started; to do so injures the pastures as well as the cows. Three hundred pounds of ground bone to the acre improve both the pasture and the

Cows.
