Satisfactory proof must be given that the parties applying for this work are actually engaged in tuition.

PREFATORY NOTE.

THE following Exercises were originally prepared for the use of the higher forms in this School, without any view to publication; but the advice of several friends, eminent no less as educators than as scholars, has induced the author to send them to press. The introductory chapter will, to a great extent, explain the plan of the work; the main object of which is to illustrate some of the more important and peculiar idioms of the Greek and Latin languages, as distinguished from our own. The translated exercises have been selected with this especial view, while, at the same time, they will be found to be fair specimens of the styles of the authors from whose works they are severally taken. A large number both of the Greek and Latin exercises has been selected from works seldom or never read in schools, while others, taken from authors more generally used, have been epitomised in such a way as to guard, to a great extent, against the danger of pupils copying from the original passages. The observations, inserted at intervals, are designed to explain and illustrate in a practical form those differences of idioms between ancient and modern languages which recur most frequently; and the foot-notes on each page are intended to assist the student in translating such words and phrases as are
