The following table is designed as an exercise upon the consonant elements. The sound of a consonant may be ascertained by pronouncing a word containing it in a slow, drawling manner. Take, for instance, the word at; notice the sound of t, as it issues from the mouth, and then utter it by itself with suddenness and force. The words are placed opposite the letter merely to indicate its sound.

An improper pronunciation sometimes arises from the indistinct utterance of consonants ending syllables, when the succeeding syllable begins with the same letter; as, a-pear for ap-pear; a-prove for approve, &c. When the elements are thus situated, if they admit of it, one must be prolonged; as, in im-mense. If the element be a mute, a short pause must be made after the first syllable, as in ap-prove.

Another difficulty arises from prolonging the sound of a final consonant to such an extent that it becomes a part of the succeeding word; as, an nox for an ox; some mice for some ice; this sour for this hour, &c.

Another cause of indistinct utterance arises from suppressing the sound of some of the final consonants when they are followed by words beginning with a vowel. Thus the word

Note. The sounds of the English language are divided into three classes - vocals, subvocals, and aspirates. The vocals consist of pure tone only, and are represented by the vowels. The subvocals consist of tone united with breath, and are represented by the letters b, d, g, j, l, m, n, r, v, and z. The aspirates consist of pure breath only, and are represented by f, h, k, p, q, t, and s.

and is frequently pronounced like the article an, or like un ; and sometimes with only the sound of 'n'; as, air an' exercise - air un exercise or air 'n' exercise, &c.

The sound of f, when final, is liable to be suppressed when a consonant begins the succeeding word, and particularly the th; as, I spoke o' the man, for I spoke of the man, &c.*

In pronouncing words commencing with wh, the letters should be transposed, thus: hwen, hwat, &c. compounds form an exception to this rule.

Who and its

The letter r, when preceded by a vowel, is seldom sounded, even by many of our public speakers. We hear fawm for form; stawm for storm, &c. So with the element ng. We hear mornin or mawnin for morning; evenin for evening, soundin for sounding, &c. These and other errors can only be successfully avoided by accustoming the organs to the correct utterance of words in which they are liable to occur.

In pronouncing words containing consonant sounds in combination, if the learner fail to articulate all the elements distinctly, he should be required to utter them separately. Take, for instance, the word lovedst. Here we have the

* Children should frequently be cautioned against reading or speaking too fast. One great cause of indistinct utterance lies in this fault. Words are hurried over and blended together in so precipitate a manner as often to pervert the sense, and cause confusion to the hearer. If we never suffer a word to be indistinctly uttered in the school-room, a good enunciation will soon become habitual.
