LE CHARLATAN.

On trouve dans ce tableau la couleur vigoureuse de l'école hollandaise et la composition de l'école italienne. Du Jardin, peintre habile, a fait peu de sujets historiques; mais ses paysages sont toujours ornés d'animaux et de figures dessinés avec goût et groupés avec talent. Ce tableau, l'un des plus beaux du maître, donne une idée juste de son goût pour ce que l'on nomme des Bambochades. Sur le devant d'un paysage, dans lequel on voit un grand monument en ruine, le peintre a représenté une de ces scènes si fréquentes en Italie. Un empirique, pour attirer le public, et vendre avec plus de facilité les drogues qu'il colporte, s'est associé avec des bateleurs, dont le métier est d'amuser les badeaux jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient assez nombreux pour que le charlatan viennent leur débiter les contes ridicules où il annoncera rapidement les cures inespérées, les guérisons inconcevables qu'il a obtenues, et dont les certificats authentiques se trouvent accrochés au bas de son portrait.

Ce tableau, dessiné avec esprit, est encore remarquable par l'harmonie du ton, l'entente du clair-obscur et la finesse de la touche. Il a fait partie du cabinet de M. Blondel de Gagny, et fut acheté à sa mort par Louis XVI.

Il a été gravé par F. A. David, Deboissieu, L. Garreau, Niquet, Houbigaut, et Chalon.

THE QUACK DOCTOR.

This picture combines the vigorous colouring of the Dutch School, and the composition of the Italian. Du Jardin, a clever painter, did few historical subjects; but his landscapes are always enlivened with animals and figures, nicely drawn and skilfully grouped. This picture, one of the finest of that master, gives an exact idea of his taste, in the style called Bambocciate. In the fore-ground of a landscape, displaying the ruins of a great building, the painter has represented one of those scenes so frequent in Italy. An itinerant Doctor, to attract the public, and the more easily to sell the drugs which he hawks about, has associated with some mountebanks, whose business it is to amuse the idle spectators until sufficiently numerous for the Quack to come forward, and glib over to them, ridiculous stories of the unhoped-for and marvellous cures he has obtained, and of which the attesting and authentic proofs are appended to his portrait.

This painting, which is spiritedly designed, is also remarkable for the harmony of the tone, the management of the chiaro-scuro, and the delicacy of the pencilling. It formed part of M. Blondel de Gagny's Collection, and, at his death, was purchased by Lewis XVI.
