Νεκροὺς δὲ τοὺς θανόντας -Θάψαι δικαιώ. 1491. φίλους Ald. and several Mss. But Brunck φίλοις from his membranæ; and this Scaliger had quoted on Varro p. 131. Αν. οὐ προκαλυπτομένα βοστρυχώδεος ἁβρὰ παρηΐδος, οὐδ ̓ ὑπὸ παρθενίας τὸν ὑπὸ βλεφάροις φοίνικ, ερύθημα προσώπου, αἰδομένα, φέρομαι Βάκχα νεκύων, κράδεμα δικοῦσα κόμας ἀπ' ἐμᾶς, στολίδα κροκόεσσαν ἀνεῖσα τρυφᾶς, ἁγεμόνευμα νεκροῖσι πολύστονον. 1499. οὐ προσκαλυπτομένα Ald. and below (1536.) with many Mss. προσκλαίω. Grotius corrected both errors. In Athenæus i. p. 4. Β. προκαλυπτομένα. Porson. 1500. βοστρυχώδεα Athen. βοτρυχώδεις R. whence probably some may join the two lines into one hexameter and read βοτρυώδεος. Apollonius Rhodius ii. 679. has used the expression πλοχμοὶ βοτρυόεντες. Βότρυς also for βόστρυχος is read in an epigram Anthol. HSt. V. p. 394. and in another vii. p. 464. But this use seems of a later date than the time of Euripides. Eustathius on Od. A. p. 1420, 64= 61, 22. cites the whole passage, as it is edited, with the exception of προκαλυπτομένη. Porson. ἁβρὰ παρηΐδος, for παρηΐδα ἁβρὰν βοστρυχώδη. " It rarely happens that the gen. of a subst. masc. or fem. is accompanied by the adj. in the neuter. Soph. Ant. 1209. Τῷ δ ̓ ἀθλίας ἄσημα περιβαίνει βοῆς Ερποντι μᾶλλον ἆσσον, for βοὴ ἄσημος. Eur. Hel. 985. Α σοι παρέλιπεν ἥδε τῶν λόγων, φράσω, for οὓς λόγους, where a Ms. has τῷ λό. γψ. Χen. Cyrop. viii. 3, 41. ἥκει δέ τις ἢ τῶν προβάτων λελυκωμένα φέρων, ἢ τῶν βοῶν κατακεκρημνισμένα. This accords with the strata viarum of Virgil. Cf. Soph. (Ed. Τ. 261.” Matth. Gr. Gr. § 442, 4. 1503. αἰδουμένα Ald. but King has given αἰδομένα from K. and thus J. M. In Burton's note aidovμéva ought, it seems, to be read. Again in 1505. I should prefer στολίδος-- τρυφάν, Por son. 1500 1505 Βάκχα νεκύων : "Αϊδος Βάκχα occurs in Hec. 1054. Hipp. 550. Herc. F. 1091. King thus well expresses the sense of this passage when divested of its poetical redundancy: Non velo genas; non, ut virgines solent, vereor ne erubescam; feror ut Furia, passis capillis, deposita tunica, dux funeris luctuosa. 1505. στολίδα κρ.τρυφάς Paraplur. ἀφεῖσα τὴν ἀνθηρὰν στολὴν, τὴν ἁρμόζουσαν τῇ τρυφῇ, τὴν ἀπὸ κρόκου βεβαμμένην : the idiom is similar to that in Eur. Hipp. 802. βρόχον κρεμαστὸν ἀγχόνης ἀνήψατο, i. e. τὸν ἁρμόζοντα τῇ ἀγχόνῃ. Theocritus introduces this custom of loosening the garments as an indication of grief on the death of Adonis, Idyll. xv. 134. Λύσασαι δὲ κόμαν, καὶ ἐπὶ σφυρὰ κόλπον ἀνεῖσαι, Στήθεσι φαινομένοις, λιγυρᾶς ἀρξώμεθ ̓ ἀοιδᾶς. Saffron-colored robes appear to have been usually worn by females: Ag. 230. speaking of Iphigenia, Κρό κου βαφὰς δ ̓ εἰς πέδον χέουσα. Aristoph. Lys. 42. Τί δ ̓ ἂν γυναῖκες φρόνιμον ἐργασαίατο, Η λαμπρὸν αἳ καθήμεθ ̓ ἐξηνθισμέναι, Κροκωτὰ φέρουσαι. See Hec. 466. sch. 1506. ἁγεμόνευμα. Schol. ἑαυτὴν λέξ γει προηγήτειραν τῶν νεκύων: see above 298. Usque adeo nihil est, quod nostra infantia cœlum Hausit. Inscriptio ap. Gruter. et Castell. et Spon. p. 37. Hujus Nympha loci, sacri custodia fontis.' Blomf. S. c. Th. 599. Ovid σ Σφιγγὸς ἀοιδοῦ σῶμα φονεύσας. τίς Ἑλλὰς, ἢ τίς βάρβαρος, ἢ τῶν πάροιθεν εὐγενετῶν ἕτερος yet she is not addressing her father. The & adhered from the line following. Hesychius: Υποῤῥάπτεις λόγους. συντίθης : where lest any one should fancy this to be a various reading of Alcest. 548. let him erase the σ which is erroneously repeated, and change the y into the similar leiter v. Geo. iv. 511. 1530. τίς τ ̓ ἄρ' Barnes from C., with which a few others coincide. Grotius has added ή before δρυός, which most Μss. sanction. Porson. 1531. ἀκροκόμοις Schol. τοῖς κατ' ἄκρον κομῶσιν. Blomfield on Esch. Pers. 547. thinks this a corrupt reading for ἁβροκόμοις, citing Iph. Τ. 1099, φοίνικά θ ̓ ἁβρόκομον : Ion 920. φοίνι και παρ' ἁβρόκομον : in both which places however ἁβροκόμαν is the usual reading. 1532. « Sometimes the case, which is governed of the prep., does not ex press the thing about which sonie thing else is, but that which is about the latter, e. g. ἀμφὶ πυρὶ στῆσαι τρί ποδα, to set on the fire, so that this κλάδοις έξεσθαι, to surround with blazes round the tripod.
