returned them his fincere thanks for the ho-
mour conferred on him; by electing him
Chamberlain, and affured them that neither
private business nor pleasure should ever pre-
vent his paying a due attention to the duties
of the office. And if the directorship of
the Bank, into which he had the honour to
be chofen, fhould in the leaft hinder a pro-
per application to the bufinefs of the cham-
berlainship, he pledged his honour that he
would relinquish the former. And that had
he not been confcious of his innocence
with respect to the alperfions thrown out
again his character, he should not have da-
red to have afcended thofe huftings.

The aldermen, fheriff's, &c. then returned
to the aldermens room to fwear in Mr. Hop-
kins; wherein a proteft was presented against
his being fworn in, grounded upon an act
of common council, which directs that no
perfon fhall enjoy the office of chamberlain of
this city, that has not ferved an apprentice-
hip of feven years, or obtained his freedom
by patrimony. Mr. Hopkins got his free-
dom by purchase. After a long debate he
was fworn in upon the following condition,
that he fhould act officially till a legal de-
termination be had in a court of law."

A motion was also made in the court of aldermen for new fecurity; the member who made the motion contended that the fecurity was given by too few people, and faid it would be better to have it given by many in fmaller fut, Prefent, the Lord Mayor, and aldermen Kennett, Alfop, Thomas, Rawlinfon, Clarke, Peckham, Smith, Wilkes, Lewes, Bull, Wooldridge, Plomer, Hayley, Newnham and Lee.

It is faid that an application will be made to the court of King's Bench, in order to fet afide the above election.

After Mr. Hopkins was fworn in, there were two proceffions from Guildhall to the London tavern. 'First an afs decorated with ribbons, &c. with a droil fellow riding upon it, and fome other of the like ftamp following him, with light blue cockades. Then a numerous company of Mr. Hopkins's friends with purple cockades, headed by feveral aldermen, &c. with mufic playing and colours flying, on one of which was infcribed, "A reward for honefty."

upon the information of Adjutant Richard fon, for treasonable practices. At four o'clock the jury withdrew for fome time, when they returned into court with a verdict for the plaintiff with 1000l. damages, fubjet to the opinion of the court of common pleas upon the point of law.

TUESDAY, JULY 2.

On Friday came on at Doctors Commons, before Sir George Hay, Knight, Judge of the Arches Court of Canterbury, the admiffion of a libel, wherein a young lady (daughter of a late noble lord) acting by two of her guardians, against a gentleman(likewife one of her guardians) has com menced a fuit of nullity of marriage. It ap pears by the libel, that the gentleman seduced the young lady from an eminent boarding-fchool at Chelsea, took her to Holland, and had a marriage celebrated with her there; after which he went to Denmark, and fo lemnized a fecond marriage, by virtue of the King of Denmark's licence, faid to be clan deftinely obtained. The guardians are endeavouring to fet both marriages afide, on the grounds of their having been folemni zed contrary to the refpective laws of Hola land and Denmark, befides which the lady, even at the time of the fecond pretended marriage, was not above 14 years of age. The Judge, after hearing four eminent civilians, declined hearing any more counfer till next term, as it is a matter of the firft confequence to both parties, and requires the moft minute confideration to decide upon. If both marriages are fet afide, the lady, on her attainment of 21 years, comes to the poffeffion of a large independent fortune, and an eventual reverfion, fuppofed to exceed 100,ocol. Dr. Wynne and another advocate, two of the lady's counfel, have not as yet pleaded.

THURSDAY, 4.

Yesterday came on before Dr. Betterworth, Chancellor of the Diocefe of London, at Doctors Commons, a motion at the inftance of a noble lord, against his lady, lately a. Duchefs (he having had previous notice. thereof agreeable to the order of court) for her to fhew caufe why a decree should not be iffued against her ladyship, to fet afide the fentence of jacitation formerly obtained by her. No appearance being given by ber, or by any proctor for her, the Judge afterhearing Dr. Harris, as counfel, and Major and Slade as proctors for his lordship, ordered: fuch decree to pafs under feal, and to be? executed on one of the pillars of the Royal Exchange, after the manner of citing Peers and Peerelles refident out of the kingdom,. which is returnable the first feffion of next.

mas, Rawlinson, Peckham, Lee, Smith, Wooldridge, and the two Sheriffs. The court was called principally to receive the anfwers of the new elected fheriffs. Mr. Wooldridge fignified his intention to ferve the office; but Mr. Kirkman fent a letter to the court, wherein he pleaded the privilege of exemption, as a captain in the Warwickshire militia. The ground on which the alderman refts his claim, is by a claufe in the militia Act of the fecond year of the prefent king, Cap. 20, whereby it is enacted, "that no perfon during the time he shall be acting as an officer in the militia fhall be compellable to ferve the office of sheriff. This plea came wholly unexpected, and threw the court into fome furprize, and brought on a general conversation; the common ferjeant was called upon, in the abfence of the Recorder, to give his opinion; he however was unwilling to decide upon the question, without the affiftance of the learned ferjeant. The court therefore referred the matter for their confideration, and adjourned a reply to the alderman's letter until this day, when thofe two law officers are to give their opinion upon the above clause, The petition of William Payne, John God frey, John Barton, and several others, praying the reward advertised by a former court, for their trouble in apprehending feveral of those perfons concerned in the dan gerous infurrection of the Jews fome time ago in Moorfields, was read, and the parties beard; the court ordered a guinea to be paid to each. Mr. Hopkins was not worn into the office of Chamberlain, the previous time limited not having expired; therefore it happened that Mr. Wooldridge did not enter into bond, because the Chamberlain not being yet compleatly in his office, the new-elected fheriff could not regularly become bound to him in his official capacity.

FRIDAY, 5:

This morning about fix o'clock, a melancholy accident happened on board his Majefty's fhip Marlborough, Capt. Hood (which hip came into harbour yesterday to dock) by the explosion of fome gunpowder in the fore part of the fhip, which tore and much damaged her infide works, and ripped up part of her decks; twelve feamen, three women, and three children were killed, and upwards of 50 wounded, which laft were just now fent to the hofpital. Various are the accounts refpe&ting this accident; but the prevailing opinion is, that fome barrels of gunpowder had been fecreted after the fhip's powder had been put into the gunhoy, which happily was just put from alungfide when it happened.

WEDNESDAY, 10.

and an officer in the army defendant. The caufe of action was feducing the plaintiff's daughter, aged 17, from the plaintiff, and detaining her under the promife of marriage. The Jury brought in a verdict for the plaintiff with 800l. damages.

THURSDAY, 18.

The Admiralty have received orders from Government (pursuant to the Act paffed the laft feffions of Parliament, for altering the punishment of felons from tranfportation to hard labour on the Thames) to make a new kind of hulk, which cannot be called properly a fhip or tender, neither is it fo flat or open as a lighter, but a veffel built on a new construction, the plan of which has been approved of by his Majefty in council, and the lords of the Admiralty. Several, by that plan, are building at Woolwich, and in about two months, as foon as the proper rotation of the different governors of thofe convicts who are to work on the river, and the orders by the A&t at the TrinityHoufe, are fulfilled, will be put in execution.

WEDNESDAY, 24.

Yesterday at a court of common council, held at Guildhall, a motion was made, that a piece of plate fhould be prefented to Sir Watkin Lewes, for his endeavours to fups port the rights and liberties of the freemen of Worcester in the late election for repres fentatives for that city. There were two di vifions, but a small majority carried it against the motion.
